New Montana 96 decibel ATV law

I saw a poster in the DMV yesterday saying that as of October 2007 it would be mandatory that all Dirt Bikes and ATV's meet a 96 db maximum sound level on public lands. I run a CRF450r with a stock system. It is not nearly as loud as a race system, but is still way up there. Does anyone know if this stock system would meet the new reqiremnets? I am sure the F-ing Forest Service will be all over writting tickets when the time comes. They never miss an oppotunity to enforce another one of their bull **** laws. I don't remember voting for any of these Forest Service chodes, but they sure make alot of laws that effect me.

CRF YZF RMZ KXF, are all offroad race bikes they dont have to meet anything. They arent made for use on public lands. You have to buy the trail model like the X, WR etc. You can buy a 96db slincer if you plan to ride it on the trails.

dont matter if there trail bikes or race bikes, If you put the offroad sticker on it, it will have to meet the new sound rules, My wr 450 with aftermarket exhaust failed the sound test. Did not get a ticket they were just testing.
I ended up putting the stock muffler back on

Yes thats what Im saying, the WR and CRFX's come from the factory with low DB pipes. I know for fact that a stock 07 450X is 91 DB. Im not 100% on the WR but from what Ive been told they are also much lower on the DB scale than the YZF.

AMA limit is 99 dB.

If I rode the KX at work I would require double hearing protection.

Where did you run into them where they were set up testing? Pipestone?

Mike they were up homestake last year letting people know about the new law coming up and testing a few of the bikes that were there.

Hmm my have to work on the Yz450 as it is a bit to loud. I hope they do the same with the sleds.

the mining city trail riders ATV fun run is up in Pipestone in a few weeks. the forest service will be there and i would imagine they will be doin sound checks on the atv's

I think so snow, Ive been on two sled poker runs this year and have ran into the forest service but never did see them checking anyone.

I ran into the forest service up near Big Sky last week. They never mentioned anything about sled noise, but they were handing out the new maps for the Gallatin Nat Forest Travel plan. They shut down everything with in an hour drive of Bozeman. I also hear that the Bridger Nordic Ski Foundation (cross country ski club) has aquired a new trail groomer which they are now grooming all of the trails in these newly closed ridding areas. I sure hope CBU can get this thing overturned. As far as sled noise goes I am sure that it will become an issue. Cooke City has sign up all over asking people to please refrain from ridding after hours, due to the local hippies up there complaining and trying to create problems. Sounds like a good launch spot for enviromentalists to get started.

Can they do that???

The main trails they are grooming are still open to ride on, but no sleds off the trails. Kinda like being in the Park.

Any trail groomed by BSNF is closed to sleds. Hyalite has 50 + miles of groomed trail now but it is only open to skiis and snowshoes. The nordic groups went well out of their way to legalize the use of their groomers in areas now closed to sleds. Oddly enough, many of these areas were closed to motorized vehicles for "wildlife security" reasons. So they basically paved the roads for thousands of gaping idiots to go wander deeper into the woods, in some of the last winter range left for the very animals they are trying to save. Typical "new montanan" thinking.

Kind of like these mountain retreats we build for the same type. Their Subaru is plastered with "Keep it wild" and "Save our Forests", but they had to mow down 10 miles of timber to build the road and get utilities into their homes. It's funny how they make and enforce rules that apply to everone except themselves.

A stock CRF with a couple hours is 100db. I wasnt able to race until I re-packed my stock muffler

You need a spark arrestor anyways for that bike to be on USFS ground.

I reccomend a pro moto billet insert and sparke arrestor unit

About 200.00 and your problem is solved.

Aftermarket systems will have a heck of a time with 96db as well

Good luck
