Kinda the same way that stiff ski and snowboard boots make you able to control your skis and board better. Not to mention they will protect your feet and ankles better than a softer boot. With a stiffer boot, when you put forward pressure on the tongue (shins) it transfers that energy into downward pressure at the toe. So in essence leaning into the boot can help initiate turns and pressure on the running boards. Hope this makes a little sense. It does in my head, but may be complete jibberish to others.
They really don't take more that a ride or two to "break in".
A huge +1 for the ultimax socks. I just buy some good ultimax ski socks from a local sporting goods retailer. About $16 a pair, but very worth it. I personally like a lighter weight sock. One that is about as thick as a good cotton sock. Sometimes I see people putting on too thick of socks or too many socks trying to layer their socks or thinking the more the better. If you sock is too thick or you wear too many it can make your boots too tight and cut off circulation and end up with cold feet regardless of how good of boots and socks you have.
I agree with the Cabela's socks. I picked up 3 pairs of them a couple weekends ago, and just wearing them in my logging boots yesterday was incredible comfortable. I already really like them. And they're thinner too. I HATE bulky thick socks. These seem like the perfect combo
