New 4 Stroke Mountain Sled

Still have my old RX1 with the MC Turbo on it, but a few months ago my buddy bought the local Arctic Dealership and asked me to come work for him so I did. We built some M-8 153" and 162" Turbo sleds while we waited for our Z-1 1100cc Factory Turbo sled to come in. Well we got it and it came with a 128" track. We made a new tunnel for it, shoe horned in a 174" track, built a new exhaust, installed a D&D fuel and boost controller. I'm just doing the clutching, gearing and boost pressure set ups now, but I can tell you there will be some very surprised people out there when we go to the mountains. This thing revs 7600 to MAX 7800 RPM so the Torque numbers are unreal! Its capable of 230hp on 94 pump gas and that translates to 155lbs of torque. It pulls like a freight train and rides like a Cadilac. By far the smoothest riding sled I have ever ridin. Going to be a great year. With this and the new 4 stroke Doo, we will now have competion for our Yamahas. Click on the image to make it larger.

humm... interesting.. :D..

congrats on the build.. have you put it on a scale yet ready to ride??

Unfortunately a 16" wide track won't fit in this tunnel, so its just a 15" x 174" and we had to notch the track to clear the heat exchanger tunnel rails. We put a Mountain Tamer rear skid in it, Simmons Flexi skis and a second blow off valve to keep the turbo spooled when on and off the throttle hard. It has VERY good throttle response and about the same Turbo lag as an Apex (Maybe a little less) The turbo is very small but I hear it and the motor are good for 300Hp. At 300Hp, reving 7800 Rpm it would have 202Lbs of Torque. (This is based soley on the calculation of 300Hp Times 5250 divided by 7800Rpm) In the real world even if it was 170-180Lbs of Torque that would be NUTS!) After we get it dialed in at the current boost I'm sure we will splash some race fuel in it and see if the bears do SH@# in the buck wheat. I still have a couple more little mods I want to do to get the boost to come on faster and spike when you hit the throttle but for now its clutching and gearing time. The front end is wider on this thing compared to our Yami's and it soaks up the bumps like no tomorrow. I have never owned a Cat in my life, Just Poo's, Doo's and Yamahas, This may be the year for a brand change. I'll sell the wifes sled, and give her the old RX-1 Turbo

Oh yea, forgot to mention, up until now Yamaha 4 stroke Turbos were the hornest sounding sleds when climbing a hill, this thing, with the exhaust we built sounds like a jet engine sceaming It makes about as much noise as a RX-1 Turbo but it does not sound like a piston driven motor? When idling it does and its VERY deep in tone, when you floor it, it make the same sound as a jet engine, like a SWIIIIISHHH sound. Its weird when you are standing there and hear it coming............

For what its worth, on 3 bathroom scales, 1 under each ski and 1 under the track, no fuel but with all other fluids 577Lbs. As a comparison, my RX-1 Turbo with a 162"x16" and no light weight parts weighs 619Lbs. We also built some M-8 Turbos out of our shop and they weigh around 490Lbs but do not pull like this thing! Anyone who has ridin a 4 stroke turbo will know when I say when you have owned one and ridin it for a while weight is NOT an issue except when you get stuck. When your on the pin they get real lite...........

I always thought these engines would make a great mountain motor, very impressive torque #'s. :D Like to see some lightweight 4 strokes. :p

Have you given any thought to what one would cost? Just curious. I know there are some things you have not done to it yet but, what does one of these sleds cost stock?

Do you think you could try to imitate these sounds on a microphone on your computer? i am not following the SWIIIISHHH, nice clean finish on the sled.

Hey Kieth, come out Sat. we are going to the Torpy, I'll let you hear it in person. We'll have our M-8 Turbos there too.

This sled should sell between 19-20 Grand ready to ride the way it is in the picture. We haven't figured the price out exactly yet as this is our 1st one. The second one is being built now. For a FACTORY turbo sled with this kind of power and a smooth ride that you have to experience to believe, its not a bad price. Now factor in no 2 stroke oil to buy every ride and if this motor is a strong as a Yamaha 4 stroke, you should get many years of trouble free riding. I have 7000 miles on my RX-1 Turbo and its still running strong and I have never touched the motor! (Yes I do know there are 4 strokes out there that have blown up, but generally speaking they are far and few between for how many that are out there and the Hp power they are producing. Try get 7000 miles out ANY brand 2 stroke making 240+ Hp, aint happening)

The motor itself is bone stock, I built the exhaust in house, installed a second blow valve for the turbo to make sure it stays spooled when on and off the throttle and it has a D&D HiJacker fuel and boost controller on it. We put Simmons Flexi skis on, a Timber Sled Mountian Tamer skid, a Challenger Extreme 15x174 Track, Skidoo 3 gallon gas can (Because they fit very nice under the back of the seat) cut down the stock seat in house, a cut down stock Arctic Cat snow flap, stock Arctic Cat window drivers from the M-Series sleds, modified the rear stock heat exchanger, different gearing in the Diamond Drive (It came way Tall Geared) an 09' 153" stock M-Series bumper and tail light, built our own rear skid mounting brackets in house, built our own 48" long dove tail that matches the stock tunnel in house, mountain bars off of a 09' M-Series (Not the adjustable ones), I am working on a boost spiker so that the waste gate sees NO boost pressure until the boost hits around 8lbs (Will greatly improve the hole shot and boondocking in the trees when you need that extra ZAP, I built one for my RX1-Turbo and it works great) and if I told you what we had for clutching you would laugh. However, it engages smooth as silk at 3300Rpm and clamps the belt hard to wide open throttle. I will take some more pictures today and post them.

Didn't take any pictures yesterday it was socked in all day. I have attached a couple more pictures here though. We were in 2-3' powder yesterday and the vents under the window that feed air to the turbo just kept plugging up. It looks like I will have to remove them and put some screens over the vents to keep snow out and let air in.

Still working on the clutching, have some new springs and weights coming, hopefully be here this week. The one thing I can tell you so for is it does not like to rev more than 7800Rpm. Shooting for 76-7700 seems to work the best so far. The factoy tach seems to read higher than the boondocker box when you hit the Max Rpm recall on both?

comparison

Snowfever, so bein that you came off of a heavy turbo rx1/apex and this new project of yours is in the weight ball park of a normal modified tapex what do you think of the ride/handling in comparision between the two?

I rode a Z1T today in MB and I was really impressed!!! I normally ride in Revy or Golden where are you guys based out of? I am really interested in what you are doing here!!!

So comparable to a lightened Vector. My cousin(from PG) just bought my step-bro's vector. Would be cool to see these head to head.
