Need some help w/worked related issue...

I have had bosses who were a bit on the wierd side, especially when you work for a family owned outfit. They get to make all the rules and none of them have to make sense to anyone but them. However, having done this for LOTS of years, I've come to the realization of a couple of things.

1. I get some perks that others don't have because of the type of company that it is. I may not have some of the benefits a bigger company has either, but in my mind it is well worth the trade off for the freedom, truck, etc.

2. Since it is their company and they get to make the rules (no matter how strange or normal they may seem), I have two options; I can accept them, put as much of a smile on my face and go to work, or I can say, "I've had enough", and quit. That's it. Whining and complaining will do nothing but ruin your attitude, piss them off and make you less valuable to them. You don't have to like it, but unless you are going to actually DO something about it (like leave), what is the point? Grab your best friend, go have a heart to heart and get it off your chest and then go back to work and be glad you've got a job.

Oh yeah, finally - have fun on a free vacation to a really cool place in the world! Many of us (who even still have jobs) didn't get anything for bonuses this year and are dipping into our savings and selling stuff - like my enclosed trailer, so that we can make it till spring when our products start selling again! (See the smile on my face?):)

So what exactly is the problem? Your whining about having to take a trip to Mexico in January?? It never ceases to amaze me that people will b!tch and moan about good things. You get a year end bonus and a trip to Mexico both, and you are not happy. You must be single, and I am sure that is why your boss wants you to go. The other employess have family and can't commit.......you on the other hand there is no reason not to.

Reading your whiny little post about how it is so bad that you have to go to Mexico frankly pissed me off, this in addition to a year end bonus. Are you gay? Think of all the tail you could score down there.

The last I checked we are in a recession. My wife normally gets large year end bonuses with her job. You know what she got this year, a card, and her company had record sales this last year. Here you are b!tching and moaning about taking a trip to the beach when others are struggling financially, getting laid off, etc. You make me sick!!

having been out of the country when 911 went down I am not too hip on being in a forign country ever again. I can fully understnd your feelings.

did you not loose your passport? aren't you afraid to fly? isn't your mom gonna fall ill right before you leave? isn't your wife possibly prego.......c'mon man. this is elementary school stuff. if youdon't want to go, don't.

Anchorman, you make some good pts. I also get some nice perks due to the smaller size business setup. I just dont like how it seemed they ignored my choice and just did what they though id like more.

There objections are not family but financial similar to me. They all have bought new property recently, while im getting ready to

Gay? Uh no, but thanks for the personal jab. Im sure im in the minority but something bout screwing someone I dont know or anything about just doesnt do it for me, is that the new definition of being gay?

I fully understand we are in hard times, odds are very good due to rising input costs that my hrs this upcoming season will be cut, so why do you think I chose the $$ over a a trip that doesnt interest me. Im building a house so having more $ would certainly be more helpful to me than this trip.

Hopefully this just dies now since it looks like its going to turn into a trash me thread...

If you don't like what they are doing, then man up and tell them.

You mentioned that you spent some of the money you were supposed to to be getting in lieu of the trip. Why did you spend money you didn't even have yet, that is why so many people have thousands in credit card debt and the economy is in the poor shape that it is in.

I am not attempting to trash you, just seems to me that you have a lot to learn and you come across as being all about yourself and what is ALWAYS best for you. Life is about making sacrifices, and not always doing what you want. Though, when you do those things that are not all about you and what you want, you will build character and learn a few things along the way. Think of all the young soldiers around your age that are fighting for our country......they are making huge sacrifices, more than you can imagine.

Perhaps the boss has other motives in mind. He did not do this to anybody else, but you. Take this like a grain of salt, go have some fun. I mean its mexico, make your own fun.

I grew up on a family run agriculture operation, still work there. Often time your employees and co-workers become almost family. And this is a incredibly HUGE gesture on their part. The quote somebody posted above me about them feeling the workers do not appreciate what they do for them, or how they take care of them is very true. Dont screw up a good thing.

Enjoy the vacation when you can get it. Soon you will be busy calving, seeding, irrigating, and harvesting the crops and will have NO time at all.

I'd say go.

It sounds like he wants you there....

I'm with you as far as vacation preferences, grandparents took the family to Mexico for their 50th anniversary two years ago; same deal... beach bum, warm weather, etc. And the whole extended family was there.

There's probably things you can do that'll get you away from the beach for a while... rent a jetski, go scuba diving, visit some ruins.

Don't think I'd go back on my own, but the family saw it was important that I was there, so that played into the decision.

tl;dr: Take the vacation and go. You'll probably kick yourself in the asss later if you don't.

For Christ's sake go! Be gracious and accept. When you get there dont be a nag or mope around. Be the life of the party. Ask your boss if he wants to go fishing or rent some quads or whatever and then insist on paying for the activity yourself!!! He may NEED this for some reason. Tog will be there next spring or even next year.

Then when your're down there invite him to go snowmobiling sometime...who knows maybe next year he'll spring for a trip to Revy. Good lord kid, suck it up.

Honestly, given this current job market.
Go, have a good time (or as much as you can) and don't worry about it.
Just make sure they know you have your tog trip shortly after you get back.

Having run a company, I can tell ya it really pisses your bosses off when they try and do something they think is super nice and no-one takes them up on it.[/QUOTE]

No kidding, I did some things for my employees, thought it was nice and they complained about it. They said I should have asked them first. Not a vacation like you are getting, but a nice gesture on my part.(I thought) The next year, I treated myself to a vacation, and Fruitcake for everybody else.

I sent four of my guys to a KC Chiefs game, gave them cash for the game, hotel, let them take a company truck, and they all complained they would of rather had the $$. I have never done that again and will not.

Hey open a shop here and I'll come work for you and take every freebie you will give me and not complain 1 bit. I'll even thank you. Been with the same company for 28 years not 1 free anything. Management always gets their freebies though.

We have a winner! My guess is that Snow Fox was born before 1964. If not, his parents should be proud of how they raised him!

I was born in '74, but grew up in a very rural enviroment where the economy is ranching. That and the US Army instilled a lot of how I live my life today. Thanks for complimenting my parents.

This lead to what I was thinking. Go and have a heck of a good time. There may be more in store for you than just a trip in the long run. Show your a team player and out for them and the company. The reward maybe a raise, a new easier position, more vacation time, who knows. Top that off with a free vacatation, Thats a dang good oppotunity your looking at. Just saying sometimes there can be hidden rewards. Kinda like that sorta good lookin chick and then you get her undressed and KAPOW!!!! She is hotter than hot with that bod that dont stop!!

Something to think about........

Send me in your place. My current boss is a really nice guy and I have a huge amount of respect for him. He is generous to a fault but I gotta tell you, I'd never get a sniff of a trip out of him. If you are the guy they chose to "make go" consider it a compliment to you. They chose you to take with them. Best case scenario you get left alone alot and drink your face off. Worst case scenario you sit on a beach and get a really nice tan while your buddies are freezing their a$$e$ off up north. Either way, you win.

Be gracious, thank your boss for the wonderful gift and go have fun (or at least call me and tell me where to pick up the tickets).

About a year ago I got some free tickets to an Avs game from work... Never been to one, don't really care for sports, but went anyways... way fun!

I went on a cruise last year in Jan (paid for by ME!) and had a great time. Luckily, while I was gone, it was colder than a well diggers... and no one went sledding any way. I have had alot of fun doing working vacations with boss's and will not ever turn any down. You may (as did I) learn that the beach and warm weather is a nice break from things. GO AND HAVE FUN!!!

Would you still be as sick if he had said they were tickets to Celine Dion? Mexico is not for eveyone. That being said, I would never turn down any gift a company has offered, even if it were a Lobster dinner and I had a shellfish allergy!

Peanuts anyone? ;)
