Need some help on Polaris clutches

Trying to get some info for my brother...(I ride ski doo and I am not formiliar with Polaris). His sled is an 09' snow check rmk dragon. Supposedly his primary clutch is toast, something is stripped out. The guy he took it to is telling him that he is going to torch the inner sheath off. That scares me...I know on ski doo's you can pop the sheath off with water and Teflon tape on the bolt threads, are polaris's the same way? I would not want anyone going near my clutch with a cutting torch, if you screwed up a little and screwed the taper up that would be the end right? My brother was mentioning a nut on his clutch??? On a ski doo there is just a bolt. I would just hate for some dude to f his sled up worse...any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks, zach

There are threads inside the clutch and if they are stripped then the puller will not work. Depending on how badly the threads are damaged you may not be able to get enough pressure with a bolt and teflon tape and water to pop the clutch either. Cutting it off may be the only option.

A simple way to remove a "Frozen" or stripped Primary Clutch is to fill the inside of the clutch bore with a grease gun, getting it full as possible. Then carefully insert a bolt or rod slightly smaller than the I.D., a short distance into the clutch bore. Wearing a heavy glove to hold the bolt or rod, smack it with a heavy hammer. This may take several attempts as the bore may not be full. You have to eliminate all the air. This method may be messy, but I've never failed to remove a clutch.

I think we need more info here, If the clutch is seized on the crank do as the above post says, fill with grease insert puller and tighten with an impact gun. I believe the nut you are refering to is on the spider assembly, its a lock nut to keep spider from turning. Sometimes you have to heat it up to free the loctite on the threads. You would have to remove this to replace the rollers and the slide buttons. Pics would help.

NEVER hit your clutch/crank with a hammer, I just disassembled an engine that had case damage from a clutch being removed improperly. The crank shifted in the case and knocked out an aluminum ridge where the crank sits.

If your bro didn't strip the threads I would find out who did and make it their problem. It also depends on what is wrong with the clutch, if the immoveable sheave is fine and it really just need weights and rollers then it can be done without pulling the clutch. Its harder but if you cant get the clutch off because the threads are stripped it can be done. Pull the cover- loosen bolts equally and spin the clutch by hand. Get the spring out. Build a tool for the jam nut, we drilled holes in a socket and cut some grade8 bolts its a bitch but its free-ish. You will have to figure out how to hold the clutch its torqued on at 225lb. Build a tool to get spider gear off. We welded some angle iron to a hub that we cut off an old axle. Same deal torqued at 225lbs. If you can get all that done then you can replace the rollers and put her back together, get a complete kit from Polaris with all the bushings.
