I am driving north through Utah the fist week of October and was considering doing Skyline drive. Is it worth doing, is it passable with stock 4wd dodge truck with highway tires, good camping areas, areas to avoid...? any advise would be welcome.

I ride the skyline drive all the time. It is a pretty drive although all the Engleman Spruce trees are dead because of the bettle. Where are you planning on getting onto the skyline drive from? And where are you planning on getting off? We have a cabin down that way and always go out from the top of Faivew canyon south down to the horse shoe mountain and back. Some of the views that you can see from the road are spectacular. You can look out across the valley and see the back side of Nebo and on a clear day you can see Timpanogus Mtn way up north. Sometimes you can even see up to American Fork Canyon. Just about 100 miles away. If you go up there you have to go up to the top of the Horse shoe and stop there for a senic view. Pretty steep mountains on 2 sides. One of these days we will climb the horse shoe of sleds but you need just the right conditions and lots of hp.

Anyway the road is recomened 4wd but its not too bad from the horse shoe to the top of Fairview. I can't tell you how it is from the horse shoe south becasue I have only been on it once and that was over 15 years ago. It is a little rutty and rocky but you should be fine. If it starts to rain it will get very slick. Seriously it can get really slippery. Especially if you you just have highway tires. If it rains you need to take your time. Trust me. My dad and I were out there once and almost went off the edge. It took us three hours to go 7 miles. After that we bought a wench to put on either the front or back. Good investment. It can come in and rain quick up there. Especially in October. Just watch the weather. If it is clear and dry you shouldn't have a problem Its 25 miles from the horse shoe to the top of Fairview Canyon

You can then go north if you would like all the way to Thisle. There are some maps of the area that i have if you would like. Let me know. I think they are just jpg's. I can post a few pics here in a minute.

OK I have got some pictures of our trip out Skyline South from Oct 2, 2005. The leaves were out in full colors so it will be a beautiful time to take that trip. It was a little chilly but not too bad. I have posted my pics on Photobucket because i had quite a few of them there. Its just easier to poststuff there. Here is the link

Just a heads up........The General Season Elk Hunt Starts the first Saturday of October and Skyline Drive gets a ton of hunters. It is beautiful on Skyline that time of year though. Some years the trees will have already dropped their leaves and other times they will be bright red and orange! Watch the weather, as said above, it can change in a blink of an eye!

Understatement of the year... I got snowed in up top back when I was in snow college and spent the night in the truck... got rescued by the Sanpete Search and Rescue snowcat the next day...

Never in my life seen snow pile up so fast.
