I am in the midwest and bought a new 2Moto R2 kit for my 2008 KTM 530 EXCR.

Has anyone installed the KTM carb heater kit on their 4 stroke? Some guy's I talked to locally said they have not had any problems with carb icing on their 450s with the 2Moto kit.

If anyone has installed the KTM carb heater on their 450 or 530 how did you go about doing it?

Thank you for your time and help in advance!

I cant wait to try this thing out!

I don't think I would worry about it... just cover it and keep the snow off...

...and, I believe the consensus was that the ktm carb heater doesn't do much of anything for carb icing. You need a lot more heat to have an effect, it seems, hence the various methods of plumbing the cooling system to the carb.

KTM heater is a pile of junk. Dont waste your time. Where i ride you need coolant heat on your carbs. Dont have it, dont bother. Lots of guys dont ride much snow. Revy pow pow is usually pretty deep and requires heat. I had my
coolant flowing all day today. Without it it wouldnt have run so perfect !

But he is on a 4 stroke in the midwest.... on a 2 moto... I a pretty positive you can cover it and make sure the heat of the engine keeps the carb warm you should be fine...

Sure. And in the right condition you can get carb ice in clear air. Happens with airplanes all the time. Just sayin the ktm heater isnt very strong. 20watts. Next

I wrapped mine in 3/8 hose and run coolent through it. Works good. Spent like $30 for valves, hose, fitting, and a custom built tee. No troubles yet and had it in -10 for a few hours.

Thanks for all of the input. Has anyone tried running an additive like heet in the gas?

I don't think anyone typically adds Heet to their gas because water and freezing gas lines dont seem to be an issue. Plus, most try to run nonethanol gas in these motors and so adding methanol works against that. Hopefully one doesn't have that much water in your gas anyway and if so, you want to replace it.

Note that carb icing is unrelated to moisture in your fuel. Carb icing occurs when the air is just the right temp and humidity that when sucked into your carbs ventura, hence under increased pressure, the moisture precipitates out and freezes in your carb.

I adapted the KTM carb heater to a 450 carb which turned out to be a complete waste of time and money. Its pretty much a useless POS, you'd be better off trying to light a fart and aiming it at your carb. The only true solution is a mechanical one using coolant so either a carb heater or wrapping your carb with tubing.
