need info on a 2001 rmk 800

i am looken at a 2001 rmk 800 and i was wondering if there is anything i should know about that year of sled that needs to be done to get her running great. Thanks for the info
 
How many miles. It's a Polaris 800 so it is prone to crank issues. Check the crank runout on it. If it has 2000 or so miles on it then I would have the clutch looked at... if it is loose/sloppy/worn I would not buy the sled. A worn/loose/poor maintain clutch is a sign of bad things to come in my opinion on an 800.

Otherwise it's a great sled. They can be made to run wicked strong with just pipe and porting. And the GenII is a light chassis.

Check the clutches and the crank run-out.

The motor itself is pretty solid. I had one and ran it for 6k miles with zero problems.
I would own one again. It was a great sled.
 
That's what we've been running....I'd agree with what's been said above.

VERY strong running engines.
 
Steering posts are week. Once bent will bend again very very easily.

Mods I did that I thought made a difference...

I like the look of that seat and I bet it works well. I have seen some of those steering posts get bent too. The cheap fix was sticking another rod in there. The cranks are a problem. Maybe you'll be luck and get one that has already been done.

I bought an 03 800 three years ago for 3,500.
In the last two years I have spent 3,800 in repairs to fix the crank and everything else it broke. I would never buy another. Just my 2c.
 
If it is high mileage I would also disasemble the waterpump shaft, inspect and replace parts as needed, or just put a new shaft, seals, bearings and belt on.
Seen too many seize up or throw a belt and then its ugly.
 
my 01 scs has about 6-7000 mi on the bottom end. it is ported w/ twins ect...
the best, most dependable sled ive ever owned.its a back up but every time i ride it i wonder why its only a back up.my 2 cents
 
My sled's like Mafesto's, minus the fancy seat. How does that seat feel/work anyway?? Mines ripped and needs replaced.
Around 3000 mi on mine with SLP twins since almost new. Runs strong still. Not sure what percentage have lower case problems resulting in crankshaft/bearing failures.
Mine's only had 1 problem that wasn't self inflicted, and that was the water temp sensor went out, and without the right resistor to put in line or a new temp sensor, the sled won't run. I carry a spare now, $15.
My sled's taken a beating...half dozen or so front suspensions tore off of it, varying degrees of carnage from just a bent trailing arm to lash it all together with sticks and hope the tie wire holds until you get to the truck:D! The chassis is still straight though. I'd rather replace bolt on parts any day than bulkheads or tunnels! Kinked the back of the tunnel at the susp mount (Real hard tail landing), straightened and reinforced it and has been good for years now.
I'd reccomend the sled, especially if the crank/cases have already been properly repaired, definately check the runout either way on the crank before buying.
Steering posts, yup, I've been dumb enough to buy the stock replacement post twice now, could've paid for a wildchild post by now. A steel rod in the post will keep it together for the weekend if you bend the post though.
I've always kept up with rebuilding the clutches and have extra SLP motor supports, maybe why my crank is still good???
 
thanks for the info i really apreciate it the hardest part is it is at a dealer in colorado and im from south dakota. I will have to ask the dealer guy about the crank and stuff he is sending me pics today of everything and telling me how many miles is on it and stuff.

That's not fair is it? You spent like $2800 on the crank repair and didn't get a full season out of it... that was the shops fault and not the machine's fault.

The seat worked very well for agressive riding.
The transition from sitting to standing was effortless.
For long periods of sitting (trail riding), it kinda sucked.
A very effective mod for reasonable money.

Cool! If I hang onto the the sled next year, I may do that.
 
well im in the process of buying a 01 800 from a dealer in the black hills ive bought my last sled from him to and he treated me right.l He says he got good into it and will let it go for 2600 so that isnt to bad even if i would have to do some repairs to it. Just waiting for sturgis to settle down to go look at it.
 
Does the sled have a wide bearing kit?

The reason I ask is you can get a RMK with a bearing kit, every mod necessary to make it a great sled for under $4500.

This may seem like lots more than the $2600 but a bottom end rebuild, bearing kit, crank trued and welded will be an easy $1000 - $2000.

Add suspension mods and a boss seat ... the $4500 seems like a very good deal.
