Need Help from my fellow riders

I will try and keep it short, but i would really like to get some good help/feedback and will answer all question anyone will have to help me make this easier to narrow down. Just tring to make the right choice the first time and I'm new to mountain riding. I have friends that do it and tell me that once you ride in the mountains, you will never ride the flat land again. LOL

I want to get a m8 or m1000 sled to ride in WY. or the black hills. I currently have a 07 f8 sno pro with 1,200 miles on it. The dealer that i bought it from said he would give me $6,500 for my sled. He has a 09 m8 sno pro 162" with 1,800 miles on it and is asking $9,000 for it. He also has a 09 m8 std 153" with 1,500 miles on it and is asking $8,300 for it. I'm not sure what to go with and if those are good prices or not. He does not currently have any m1000, but said he will before the riding season. I have a friend that has the telescoping handle bars on his sled and loves them. I have rode his sled and they are nice and would like to have them, but the std. does not come with them on it. My friends sled is a (2010 all black crossfire 8 sno pro sled). Also I'm not sure on the track lenght for the m sled. Do I need to go with a 153" or 162"? I'm 5'-11" and weight 210lbs. I have also looked at the m1000's, but have heard that when it comes to sale the m8 will bring more or hold more valve then the m1000. Just what I have heard, don't know for sure. Hope you guys or gals can help me out, and ask any questions you have, if it will help me in my decision.

Thanks!!!

The prices quoted are high for M8 used..

Last year I purchase a new 09 M8 snopro for $8100.00 in September no less..

You should be able to find a good used 2010 M8 for around $8000.00 and craigslist your sled to get the most out of it..

The length of track should be driven by your style of riding.. If your a climber then 162... If you boondock in the trees then stay with the 153.. Both will climb well and perform awesome for you

Here's my .03cents.... Buy the 153 M8. Crossfires are hard to sell because they are equally not good in the mountains and the flatlands. The reason I say 153 is that you would be more comfortable on it from the get go because it has a track length closer to what you are used to and I have found that the 153s will bring top dollar because there are MORE 162s out there and are a lot more common. This is also why the M8s are holding their value.....because there are a TON of M1000s out there and only a handful of M8s for sale.

Whoever told you that once you ride the mountains you will never be the same, WAS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!:face-icon-small-hap

A guy up here just sold several 2010 M8's for $7500. They were 153" with less than 1000 miles on them. I would have bought one myself but I am looking for a 162" I prefer more track than some, but it's usually up to me to get into places the others are stuck in and get them out. I'm a little better rider than some of the others but I still like having a larger foot print to get out of some tough creek bottoms and tangles. The dealer sounds kinda high on the price but he is giving you a lot for your trade. Being new to mountain riding you would find the 153 easier to get used to, but the M's handling is very good and I doubt it would make much difference.

Thanks to the ones so far, that have give me good input. You can always count on the SnoWest folks when you need help.

If he is only asking for a difference of $1800 for the 09 153 take it asap. I figure I loose $2000 a year on my m1000's. His prices are high but thats also a lot for your trade. I like the 162 but for where you sound like you will be riding the 153 is more than enough. I would sell my 09 m1000 1,800m for what he is giving you on trade, and it has lots of new parts.

Prices for the M8's do seem a bit high(I am not sure but 6500 seems decent for your trade in), but you can trade yours in without having to sell it out right. Which makes it a faster deal. And if you like your dealer, you will still have a good relationship with them.

I would go with the 153 STD M8, and have the dealer do the wide Diamond Drive bearing.

wide Diamond Drive bearing? Call me stupid, but what is this?

his prices are quite high for high mile sleds

i'm assuming $6500 for yours is pretty good, but if not sell yours for as much as u can get, and buy a 09,2010 m8, or a 09 m1000. ihave a 09 m1000 162 and love it, if your climbing mtns alot buy the 162, the telescoping bars are great once u put an anti slop bracket on them $50 from BDX. wyo boy will sell his 09 m1000 162 for $7000 obo, i've seen some other 09 m1000 for around $7500 for higher mile sleds over 1400 mile. good luch, guaranteed u will fall in love with the mtn. riding

Thanks everyone, keep them coming the more the better. Snow will be coming and I need to get off the fence. lol

I'd take the 153 std M8 as well. I've got an 09 153 sno pro that I ride in the Bighorns and I love it. Does what I need it to. I'm the limiting factor, not the sled. But I wouldn't pass up on a sled just because it's not a sno pro. The adjustability on the post is nice, but I've got the BDX slop eliminator installed and there is still a fair amount of slop just from the adjustable height mechanism. If my post bends I'm replacing with a standard post and aftermarket riser. I don't do many trails though so I tend to leave mine all the way at the top, even with the AMP riser installed. Of course others disagree, as with most things here on the forum. Whenever I lower mine down, I find a spot I want to play and they go right back up again. Do a search and you'll find a lot about the steering post.

Here's a thread on the wide bearing they're talking about.http://snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=151644&highlight=wide+bearing

And yeah... mountain riding is where it's at.

Go with the 153 there is absolutely zero need for a 162 in the black hills, i dont get stuck with my 141 and its hard to even find a challenge anymore. I would go for the standard and throw on an oles angled riser and you are good to go.

Do you think it would be fine in WY. also?

Personally I would go with the 09 m8 sno pro 162.

I don't really notice the extra track length until I am in a boondocking situation. The 162 floats a bit better. So I can keep my ground speed down a bit more than I can with the shorter tracks.

The only reason I would go with the m8 is if I had dreams of a turbo.

So I have the m1000 because I like the bottom end grunt and the ability to get a few more ponies out of it without going turbo.

No plans for a turbo=get the m1000
Plans for a turbo=M8

With your size and weight the extra bit of weight up front on the m1000 will be nill. But you will want the ponies.

Where in WY, I know on the big horns it take 2-4ft of pow to keep me from pulling a wheelie the whole way up the hill. To find challenges on my sled I have to get in tight trees on steep sidehills. I make fools out of dragons and xp's. But the farmers almanac is claiming the worst winter ever is coming. So maybe there will be a challenge coming. Can't wait. If I sold mine, I would just get a new 2010 m1000 and if they don't come out with one in 2012 I'll keep it.

i ride a 2010 m8 std with a 153....there were times i wish i would have a 136 cause it was just keep going up in the trees, and you know how the saying goes, what goes up must come down!!!! i ride in bc, it is very steep, and deep....my vote is m8 153, wont be much to get used to, where the 1000 has a learning curve

The m1000 has the same learning curve as a m8, the only difference if you go from a m1000 to a m8 is a loss of power. The other way around m8 people think they are heavier. My work boots weigh as much as the difference, I just think people are intimidated.
