My sons 18th

Hey guys,

As you can see from above my son is turning 18 this year and i want to get him a big present. He has not long started going out with his friends on their snowmobile and having a real good time, he never stops talking about how fun it is. Personally i have never ridden one so i am clueless when it comes to snowmobile. I want to get him a snowmobile that is a pretty good all round ride, flat surfaces, hills and possibly long distances i'm not too sure. I have done a little research online and Yamaha seems to be a strong start and i have ridden their bikes for years and never had any real problems, monster engines. And these are online everywhere with good reviews to it is hard to argue.

But this is why i am here i'm thinking you guys might know what is best for my son on this occasion. I don't think he needs a youth snowmobile, as far as i am concerned he knows how to ride so hes not a real beginner but he has only been talking about it for the past year-ish. Any information would be great guys, the smile on his face will be one to remember forever!!

Thanks guys

it all depends upon what part of the world you live in and what piece of the great out doors your son plans to ride in.

While I am a Yamaha motor fan, a 4 stroke Yamaha might not put a smile on your son's face, they have their place, but is he there ?

Welcome. Your son is a lucky kid with a great dad!
So you posted in the snowbike section which is not really what your looking for. This should get more replies or info in the General Snowmobiling section.
Agree w above. Need to provide more info for the folks here to make accurate suggestions. Like.....
Where is he riding? Midwest, mountains?
Type of a riding, trails, back country, both?
Your budget. $8-12k for new machines. Decent first sleds can be had in the under $2000 range if one is a little mechanically inclined.
Size of the rider. Is he 150 soaking wet or a soon to be college linebacker?
This is subjective as any question with respect to brands, models etc.
Used sleds can be a great deal or a basket case. Do you know anyone local to you that can help you sort through the bad ones if you're going to buy used?
In general I'd say most sleds of all brands in the 600cc 2 stroke range would be suitable. And they're generally more reliable less work than the big engines with plenty of power still. 4stroke yamahas are of course very reliable engines. Comes at a big weight penalty if he will be in a lot of deep snow/off trail.
Again welcome to the forum.

Riding in the mtns, Polaris Pro Axys, 600 or 800. If you live in the Midwest with no mtns..........Move!

When it comes to ridding his friends have trailers and go on trips so he can go pretty much anywhere but i will have a conversation and try and get some more specific info out of him. He is about 150 soaking wet hahaha. My budget isn't really a problem i don't do things like his for him often and because 18 a big birthday i am surprising him.

I'm going to have to have a look into the sleds and see what they are all about, i'm sure YouTube will help me out there.

Thanks for the reply's guys!!!

^What he said! His buddies will go full re tard when he rolls out a barking blue 450 long track!

Back to the sleds. You still didn't say if you're out west in the mountains or back east.
Either way, unless he's always riding at really high altitude, a newer 600 long track is more than enough mountain sled esp since you allude to him being a newer rider.
All 3 are awesome sleds. Go Pro or Axys if you want the lightest best handling. Skidoo XM or M6000 are just as solid but a tad heavier.
If you're going almost new or new cant go wrong with any brand.
