MX style helmet + goggles, what to look for

My Ski-doo helmet came with the built in (removable)mouth\nose gaurd and under chin gaurd. I found that the under chin gaurd blocked way to much air flow and I thought the mouth\nose gaurd was great untill I would get stuck then I had to take off the helmet so I could breath. Now with mouth\nose gaurd out and Scott turbo X89 w-nose gaurd in I can leave my helmet on when stuck so as not to fill it with snow. The Ski-doo helmet has the best built in mouth\nose gaurd I have ever seen, better than HJC and after market add-ons.

Duplicate post:

One thing I learned when working at the dealership is some of the more expensive helmets will make their shells to fit only 2 sizes of foam. So say xs/s, another for m/l and then another for xl/xxl. And then you get the Arias who each helmet is it's true size.

Then some of the cheaper helmets will use the same shell for all sizes and just use varying thicknesses of liner to make the "size".

At the time I was like "so??" hahaha I have been paying attention to how helmets fit people and paying attention to how well their goggles fit to. What I seem to be finding is that some of the less expensive helmets on smaller heads hold the goggles further off the face (due to thicker padding) and allow more fogging!!!

Now, like I said, this is an observation. We'll be putting it to the test soon, one of the guys that has this "thick foam" issue is buying a new helmet with this in mind to see if it could be truly the problem. Guinee pig.

While they are still dot and snell approved and that extra foam feels good (but will also fail faster in the long run) this might be something extra to look at.

And I already had 3 pairs of Scott goggles and knew I wanted a new 661 mountain bike helmet (mx style, good safety rating and LIGHT) so I took my goggles with me to the store to try my helmet on. GREAT fit.

I carry 2 sets of Scotts on the hill, amber and rose colors for varying conditions.

hey i think you just solved my problem last time i went riding my goggles were fogging up really bad luckally one of my friends girl friend went and didn't ride so she let me barrow her goggles while mine were defogging. i will look for a better halmet next time great advice thank you alottt!.

Thanks there have been some great sugestions.....

One thing that remains a clear point is you have to match your goggles to your helmet, is there any company that makes a helmet goggle combo that work well togather or is this a hit or miss thing ?

I like the looks of the 509

no one makes a helmet goggle combo that I know of. Just take your goggles down while shopping for a helmet or visa versa and try some on. You will be much happier with a combo that fits good together than just buying what's on the sale rack or what looks the coolest.

2 pair of goggles!

I have found that haveing two pair of goggles is the way to go. Get you some velcrow and stick one pair to your air box and alternate throughout the day. You will never have problems with fogging.

I have to add another goggle comment in here.....this last Sunday we rode, wet snow, flat light, and snowing, everyone we ride with wears MX style helmets w/ goggles, different brands, everyone was fogging but me. I got my Scott 89 XI Turbo goggles w/ nose piece last year from the Miss Extreme contest, I carry 2 more sets of goggles, and never have used them. I wear my goggles sometimes while helping get people unstuck or taking a break, and still no fogging. Tuesday we went out in over the hood snow and it was cloudy in the am, and very cold all day. Again everyone was fogging, I wore my goggles all day, taking them off some, but I made sure no snow got on the inside, still never fogged. The 89 XI series is bigger than the voltage series, but the voltage is suppose to be better, I am going to try out the Voltage series this weekend...;)
