Must have for the helmets.....

Not to start an argument and not to hi-jack this thread but...say the average sled costs $9K, dealer 'says' they only make $80 a sled making the profit margin per sled < 1%. I know that they make more margin on parts and accessories as I've had this discussion many times before BUT, do you really think that they would consistently sell these for <1% margin? I have a hard time believing that one.

That 1% is probably the sales guys commission for selling the sled. There is no way I'd be putting my money into anything that had a 1% return.

I have to say that my local dealer is far from the best....but they are here when i need them. Yeah, I know i could find alot of stuff cheaper elsewhere, and yes alot of time they have to order in parts for me, but I'm all about supporting local businesses. I'd rather spend a little more upfront to help keep their doors open than have to overnight a new belt when i want to ride tomorrow and my "old" dealership went out of business..

A new $10,900 dragon only costs dealers about $7500. 1% margin? HAHAHA

Ya, if you're selling them out of your back yard and have zero overhead. I'm guessing Polaris isn't going to let anyone get away with that.

I'd love to see some of the big talkers go into business for themselves and see how long they last.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. I am not laughing at Polaris, I am laughing at the 1% margin. Obviously, they need to make a profit and dealers deserve to. With out the dealers Polaris is nothing anyways, so the dealers need some cash flow. We all rely on our dealers to set the sleds up from the factory and if a dealer can hand you a new sled, problem free, with a warranty, good service, and well tuned clutching for your area, altitude, snow conditions, then they deserve to be paid for their efforts.

There is not a business out there that has 1% markup.

So again I am not sure what you are saying or what your point is. I'm not sure what “big talkers” have to do with running a business well, but what ever you say beels. You seem to have a never ending fountain of wisdom so you might as well express what ever point it is that you are trying to make.

I know first hand that some dealers will sell lower than the “posted price” to good customers/family/friends. Will they do it for everyone? NO, can they? NO, Is it good business practices? NO, do they do it at times? YES

Back to the quick connect straps.. If you are paying $8 on line, you are getting screwed. Bought all mine from the dealer @ $5.95 ea. Different brand, but same concept. No shipping from the dealer either.

I just went to the Edge in Draper Ut. and NONE!!! We got new helmets this year and I'm missin the quick connect strap. They are the way to go! Now if I can just fine a dealer close buy that has some.

I took all my Echo's off. Too hard to use with gloves.
Went with something like this. http://www.libertyhelmets.com/qr.html
Not same brand but same concept. Easy one hand release.

Now someone needs to invent some type of goggle quick strap. Maybe velcro or something. hmmmmmmmmm:rolleyes:
LMAO

What he said. I can't stand them

I know that you are just trying to get a rise out of people. About $7500? I don't know where you think you have gotten this info but you are plain wrong. Around my area sleds are sold to keep staff on year round' not to make much money. Why do you think that sled dealers come and go? Dealers are very popular for a short period of time. At some point the realize that they need to make a few bucks to keep the doors open.

I have pretty good dexterity and have nimble fingers....don't like the Quick Connect. Never have. I too have seen them ice over pretty good like someone said above.

Dealer cost is around 9k on a Dragon. I'm pretty sure.

Hate to burst your bubble...but those things aren't that great. We put them on our kids helmets and my wifes.

I'm always doing someone's straps for them when we are out.

You can't put them on with your gloves either so why bother?

I'm definately NOT putting one on my helemt.

.

I'm with the Scott...I'll stick with my strap and my strap doesn't freeze up!

Last time i asked a dealer what he paid for a sled before anything was done to it, he said it was around $7500. That was a few years ago but i doubt sleds are costing anymore to build now than they were 2 years ago. It might be up to $8500 now but i would seriously doubt anything over that. Remember, a lot of new sleds sell at $8000-$9000 (600’s, 700’s) and do you really think that 200cc’s and 8” more of track costs another $1000 to build?

I do know people that work for dealers and yes, bigger displacement and longer tracks do cost more. You are using $10,500 as your retail reference. I won't get into specifics but lets just put it like this, at the $9000 you said the dealer would be losing money.

On the other subject, there are a few quick releases out there. The only one that has been proven time and again is the Echo quick release. It has a plastic outer sleeve but the inner workings are metal. They work very well once they are adjusted and the only time that I have seen one freeze is during freezing rain.

Yeah.... cuz the dealer is selling sleds and loosing money on them....... Lets not drift off to dream land boys.
PS. Could you imagine how much that would hurt getting a little big of neck caught in that buckle as she snaps together? lol ouch

Dream land, that would be nice. Ill get off of this subject now because I do know the numbers and you believe something different. With as short of a selling season that a dealer has, they do sell a lot of there sleds at a loss.

I agree. Most do not sell brand new sleds at a loss but many sell sleds several years old at a loss. The 900 RMK comes to mind. I have seen some dealers sell it at $5500 and I'm sure they paid a lot more for it than that. Granted, some money is better than no money. ;)

thats the main reason i still use my old skidoo modular. love the quick connect that comes with it. i have a brand new fly with 509's that i don't wear a whole lot the buckle on it is a *****

Yep, (damn, that the 2nd time I agreed with you today!)...as I've gotten older I have realized that sometimes saving money is not the cheapest route. If you can find a good dealer like I have, it is worth paying a little more. I even asked my dealer for a cut on parts because I ordered so many for my last repair and he took another 10% off. Loyalty on both sides. Now the trick is to find a good dealer who is not simply trying to make money on everything he sells, but make money in the long run.

Ok, I really feel underpaid now.

Me too! Let's see, run 2 sleds, enclosed trailer, diesel pusher for weekend trips, I think he is bragging a little here, boat, 1/4 share airplane. He doesn't understand basic economics and expensive is all relative!

I don't think I've unstrapped a helmet in 20 years. I just loosen the strap and push it towards the face guard when I pull off the helmet. Slide it on the same way and then just snug up the strap. Couldn't be any easier. A buckle doesn't sound appealing to me.
