My nephew and I are gonna take a sledding trip to Baker and spend a few nights. I've never ridden Mt Baker so I'd like to know what town should we stay in that's fairly close. We don't require a 4 star inn but good eats and cable are a must. Also looking for general directions to the riding area's? Thanks

I'd google "lodging Sedro Wooley". No reviews for ya, as I haven't lodged up there but that's probably the closest town w motels. That'll put ya a half hour or so from the sno-park.
Out of sedro Wooley you take hwy 20 then left at baker lake rd...after approximately 7 miles you cross a bridge and turn left at the sign for "mt baker rec area", follow that a mile or so til you see snow. I'm sure I'll be corrected a few times but I think I got ya close ;-)

I am new to the area and have rode Baker a few 4 times with guys that I met on Snowwest. long story short, Im not a rookie, and that place can screw a guy up in a BAD way. If it socks in up there you can find yourself dead in a hurry. its like no other place i have been fun and dangerous all the same.

after a scary 2+ hours of being lost *with guys who had riddin there for a combined 40 years or so* I quickly went and bought the best GPS money can buy.

I would hook up with a guy that knows the area if the weather decides to **** you over. Im not that guy, but i am always up to ride.

have fun, Baker is a blast.:face-icon-small-hap

most of the Baker area is devided in half...up the middle from what we call peanut knowl...hug the hill side from Peanut and you will go up thru a wide ravine..up and over to what we call Big House on the left..then it opens up to a lot of rolling drainages with open areas..some gentle and some not so gentle. On a good snow year you can ride down the drainage that parralels peanut and end up right below peanut..last couple of years that creak wasnt ridable. Ehile at peanut look to the right and you will see the shortcut highway that goes in the same area. It can be trenched at the top and its never the same as you go over...small rest stop at the top and then just a short little hill down and then you can go right back up the next little hill in front of you. Learn this route it is your escape route if to get back down if the vis goes to zero.

Now on the left side of the Peanut valley..never called it that before...look up and to the left5..there is a lone tree where you might see some tracks..that is the shortcut back from the other side if vis goes to crapola.

The riding is terrible on that side so stay away from my snow down in the horse barn area...it is bad snow..real bad...:D some years you might actually see the top of the roof of the horse barn..there really is one.

Now a little to the right oif dead center from the peanut valley is where the Glaciers are....stay away from them..there are crevaces up there that to this day are a burial site for some. If yoiu go into one you are not coming out unless in a body bag..if you even get found.

Couldnt find my awesome shots of the areas...Think they are on other puter. Sorry.

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to school me I appreciate it.

A short story for ya. A friend of mine (who has a cabin by me in the Teanaway) fell in a crevasse back in the early 90s. He left his group to cruise the glacier and suddenly crossed a small crack and fell off his machine down into the crevasse. the sled remained across the crevasse still running. He was down about 20 feet without gloves but he did have a camera. He remained in the crevasse long enough to try and escape which cost him all his finger nails he was there long enough to consider it his resting place. Hours later some riders saw an unmanned machine and rode up to it to find him in the crevasse. He was roped out but the sled being heavy and very unsteady was airlifted out. He may have posted pics on here at one time.

You thinking of this weekend? If not shoot me a PM when you guys are heading up there. I've been there a few times. I could show you what I know of the area. It would be great to get up to the crater rim.... something I've never done bit I'd want someone with lots of Baker experience along for that......

Derek will love Baker.

Both you guys should come. We'd would love to have a guide. We'll be there Wednesday 3/2 - Saturday 3/5 but could stay till Sunday if needed.
