Well I am really concidering on moving out west. Not to sure where to move. Besides a place that is close to riding areas. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas on where to go. Where the jobs are? Right now I am a maintenance tech at a glass coating company. Thanks

my response

I moved from N.E. Iowa 5 years ago to Laramie Wy. Bought my frist home and got an OK job not far from the Snowies . The people here have been real nice and the weather is not as cold and not as hot , I love this place Laramie is just right size town not to big but has everything I need . This move has worked well for snowmobiling as well , every brand is represented and full staff at all the dealers . and great areas to ride that are close and deep powder most of the time ,good trail system and plenty of off trail riding .Well I could go on for pages but well lets just say I'm glad to be here !

I lived in Laramie, WY for 10 weeks last summer (2010) and really liked it. It was more of an extended visit I suppose, but either way, I plan to move back to go back to school at UW (about a 5 year deal). I currently live in Gunnison, CO, which is a great place, but decent employment isn't very abundant. Both of these places are within an hours drive from good sledding, always a bonus. I moved out to CO from the twin cities of MN to go to school, and can't ever see myself going back.

You may take a look at Billings MT. Spent most of last winter there on a large project. Not far from some great ridin areas. Would ride out of Red Lodge MT. about 45-60 mintues out of Billings. It's the largest city in MT. so everything you need is right there without the hassel of a big city. They have a low unempolyment rate also. I myself have been looking at purchasing some rental properties there.

Just out of curiosity Dave, what do you do? You live by the dam right? Dutch John I assume? Work for the BOR? Spend alot of time down there myself in the summer!

realistically most riding from Billings about 1:45 on a good travel day to 2 hours from Billings. Access to Beartooth via Red Lodge not feasible for all riders all times in my opinion. Billings to Chief Joseph highway to Top of World. From there can ride to Cooke but cannot truck to Cooke from east side but have to go through Yellowstone via Livingston/Gardiner.
Other great riding Little Belts/Castle Mountains(realistic access within 2 hours to account for 10-12 miles of forest service single lane) or all way to Kings Hill parking lot almost another hour. Numerous areas around Big Sky but over three hours there from Billings. Bozeman great access to close snowmobiling and skiing but Bozeman has more "winter" than Billings.

Find employment, resonable housing... make a list if you can and visit each. Unless you have a favorite already picked out.
Wish you the best in your move!!!!! It is a big decision!

You probably wouldn't like Montana...Riding is terrible, no winter, people are mean and lots of hippies, hunting and fishing are both real terrible too...check out Idaho or Utah.
yeah, its not worth movin here.... riding is poor and seasons are short, especially this year. hippies everywhere(stinky ones) and to top it off.. horrible job market.

i heard that down in CO/UT/WY there is much better riding.. even ID is alright.

i definitely wouldnt go to montana... especially not bozeman.. no riding anywhere near there, the season is so short, air is all fogged up with nasty waste, everywhere you go you run into people.... definitely stay out of montana not a good place to be at all.

Montana is full of mean out-of-staters. They screwed up their state, moved here and know how to fix our problems. There is no good snow only BAD snow. Income is low. Best paying jobs are in Bozeman. Get your cardboard sign, dress for the part as a pig, bring your dog and people give you money. It is a 50K+ job with no tax problems. The mountains are too steep for flatlanders. The environmentalists are shutting down the mountains so the parking lots are full of cookie spinners. Last winter sucked so bad. We only had four days of sunshine. County roads were seldom plowed. It just sucks in Montana. Pass on the word.:faint:

Exactly. What was I thinking? Montana sucks. Riding season very short, and your wife will hate you for moving here and divorce you. No pretty women here to choose from after that. Your kids will drop out of crummy schools and grow up to be pot heads and meth users. Maybe consider Colorado but definitely not Montana.
