Mountain Sled?? Or Not?

Wasn't the AXYS platform introduced with the Switchback a year before it was used as a mountain sled chasis?

Yes, but the flat lander and the mountain version of the AXYS chassis only share one part number. One of the forward bulkhead halves is shared, the other side is the same casting but is machined differently for the steering frog mount. The rest of the chassis' are unique to their respective end use. In essence they only share the acronym AXYS.

Because the #2 post is from the OP and he obviously knows a thing or two about mountain sleds. So, I believe he was being sarcastic.

Today's mountain sleds, from all 4 manufacturers, are drastically different from trail sleds. If this thread was stuck back in the 80s or 90s, it would have merit, but with today's sleds, it's just silly.

You got that from that picture? A flat meadow with 4-5' of snow in it? There is no discernible inclination in that photo. Doesn't a mountain need at least a little slope? I know some of you are from the mid-west / plain states where you call the overpass ramps "mountains" but out west we think of them as at least a 5000-6000 vertical foot change in elevation.

Mountain sled?

Economy of scale for the MFR says there has to be some common parts or your Mountain sled would cost $35K.
That being said, the differences between the trail version and the mountain version sometimes are obvious - and sometimes are very subtle - with profound differences in performance for the desired use. :juggle:
These engineers are not as dumb as some think!
 
I thought this was a whole new sled. Did they really base it off an xm chassis?

Well lets see, pretty well same soft mushy front suspension, T-motion, over the engine steering post, torsion spring rear suspension etc. Still fatter and heavier than the Polaris. I don't think it is all new but I have high hopes for Doo as I know they can build an "extreme" sled if they put their minds to it. I would like to see BRP start using light weight a-arms and rear suspension parts and maybe some other exotic materials to lighten up their designs.

So with that in mind, cat and poo build basically the same chassis. They both use a vertical steering post, they both have a rigid suspension, they both run 2.6" tracks, they both use coilover suspensions in the rear. All this time I was lead to believe they are completely different chassis'. Lmao. Just because it uses the same type of steering, and same type of suspension and the same type of materials doesn't mean it's the same chassis.

As far as fat goes, yes the boards are wider but the widest part of the bodies are exactly the same. (Axys compared to the 850). Yes I checked them sitting side by side in my shop. Heavier? Yes the skidoo is heaver. It also has a stronger chassis. Some people like stronger over being lighter so I think a little diversity is a dam good thing.
 
I heard the Axys is a disposable sled!
2 years at most then toss it!
