mountain riding advice & tips

After you learn how to put the sled where you want, you need to learn how to pick a line. Look way ahead and don't look where you don't want to go. If you look at that big hole over there because you don't want to hit it, guess where you will end up, I learned this the hard way. If your going down hill you need the clutches engaged to turn the sled, If your skidding the brakes you will have no steering control. If your going up through trees you need to know how your going to get back down. The line back down will look way different once you get above the trees, carry a saw just in case!! Lots of good info here, keep it fun, but remember that these new sleds will take you places that can get you in trouble.

x however many the throttle is your friend is a great peice of information:D and counter steering helps a bunch:D jumping use the brake and gas and it is just a get some balls and do it type deal:D one other thing if the tree is 5 ft or less its traction.

ridin' better every time

I second the riding with sledders that are more experienced and 'better' than you are! If you learned something from them and had a great day -buy 'em a beer! It's a win/win scenario... :)

No better advice than this!

Learn your limits and push them every ride. Learn to counter steer, side hill, leave the sled mostly stock, and ride with people who are better than you!
No better advice than this!
Especially riding with people better than you, and do you and guys you ride with a favor and learn how to get yourself unstuck.

Good luck

one of the best things i did when i was learning to ride in the hills was take a shorty on a week long trip with 7 mountain sleds. I was on a f7 with a 1.7x128 track. I had to keep it to the bar whenever i wanted to move anywhere. I remember a few hills that i tried to climb at least 10 or 15 times.... Try and try again. Good luck man!

Pick you up a saw to cut your way out when needed and a shovel to build you a good platform on those really steep hills that you don't make it up. Both of those can be life(sled) savers if your buddies can't find or reach you.

All of the above are excellent tips, but the most important is to practice burning hundred dollar bills and the rest will come:D

If you want to go left, turn right. If you want to go right, turn left! LOL. When you turn to climb, don't second guess yourself, or hesitate or you will trench out. Hammer down until you are nearly stuck, then get pointed down hill. Get a good bar riser to get your leverage up where it needs to be, and don't get frusterated... it takes some time and work.

all good info posted here..all i can add is it is reasonably easy to learn the basics...it is impossible to master them(well unless your name is chris burant)...but biggest thing I have seen with new riders is being able to learn to commit..very hard to do but is the only way to get better.....

sandman you are right... One of the BEST things you can do to enjoy sledding more is to get in shape.
