Mountain Riding – Track Tension & Hifax Wear

Mountain Riding – Track Tension & Hifax Wear

I am a new Poo Owner and bought a 2002 800 151” RMK. I have owned a MCat and it was pretty standard to remove all of the bogies, run scratchers and ~ 2” of sag on the track. I’ve searched here and saw the 10 pounds of weight 18” back from the rear wheel etc. and this is about where the track is now.

The reason I am asking is I completely smoked a set of hifax today running the above mentioned set up. With that said, we did do a fair amount of trail riding today in search of fresh snow but thought the scratchers would’ve taken care of it. Does the Poo skid like/need bogies? How many miles should I expect out of a hifax if I continue to run this set up (sled came with 1500 miles and doubt the hifax has been replaced, but again, it had all the bogies on it)? I am running an offset axle with 8” two wheel kit FWIW.

Thanks in advanced for any input.

Scratchers are mostly for engine heat if they aren't in front of the hyfax (ie on the skis). If you aren't running in powder, you need the wheels. To run it loosely enough for a no wheel set-up you would likely need to install some anti-rachet drivers...

May you find enough powder in the future to lower the need for scratchers or wheels!:face-icon-small-coo

Hyfax

Polaris suspensions are hard on hyfax at the bottom of the front rail bend. I would leave that set of boggies in place. Other thatn that, they should be no harder on hyfax than the cat. Scratchers still help with lubrication as well as cooling. I think you may have just been a victum of hard snow and too much speed. Even with scratchers down, you will heat them up at high speed. When you replace them, make sure you break them in with the heat, quench technique.

Thanks for the input fellas. I don't know if I was a "victim" cuz it sure was fun getting out. :face-icon-small-coo I’m going to put the front bogie wheels back on and loosen the track a bit. Would a set of HiperFax be a good thing or a waste of money for this application?

Hyfax

I ran Hiperfax on my genII and never had to replace them. Lots more money now than the regular stuff so I just run that. I haven't run Hiper on any of the new suspensions so I am not sure how much better it would be. Probably a good idea if you want to spend the money on it.
