Mountain Max tunnel

I have 01 Mountain Max sitting in the garage that doesn't get much use anymore. My girlfriend takes it out a couple time a year but other than that its just kind of a spare sled. Well I'm kind of looking for a new project so I want to do some work on the MM. Does anyone have any idea where to get a tapered aftermarket tunnel for this sled. It has a currently has 141" track so I'm looking for at least a 151" or longer tunnel so I can do an extension. I've searched the internet and can only find a mountain performance tunnel. Any other ideas or websites that might help out? Thanks.

I have a mountain performance tunnel kick up style that was on an 98 SX.I parted out the sled but still have the tunnel. It looked awesome and I could send you some pictures if you are interested. No damage, used on 5 one week trips over a 3 year time period. It will fit any mountain max or viper.

If you can get that MPI tunnel, I highly recommend it. I have one on my 02 Viper with a 151. It made such a huge difference because it comes with the drop and roll and the kick-up up is nice with that pro-action skid. Remember that you will need to modify your chaincase. Mabey Trent's case will work if it is still with it.

So I'm new to the chain case stuff, can you explain the drop and roll and what modifications I need to do to mine. Anyone have pictures?

The chaincase needs to be modded. You need to have the brake mount cut off and then rewelded onto the chaincase on the topside. Also the dipstick tube needs to extended by about 6 ". I may have a pic of one done but you will need to find a guy who has a jig. MPI may know of somebody doing the mod as they used to sell or maybe still do sell the tunnels.

When I did mine, I just sent my case to mpi and they sent me a modified case. However I purchased the tunnel directly from them. They are good guys though, very helpful and I am sure for a small charge, they would set you up. First though, I would see if youcan get a case with the tunnel, your Mountain Max and that SX should use the same case.

As far as the drop and roll. On your MM the jack shaft runs over the top of the tunnel and the chain case drops pretty much strait down to the drive shaft. On the MPI tunnel, The jack shaft is lowered and actuall runs through the tunnel just a little bit above where your drive shaft ran through the factory tunnel. To accomidate this the bottom of the chain case is rolled toward the rear of the sled. The end result is that your drive shaft is aroud 2in. lower and 3 in. farther back. The MPI tunnel has the rear skid moved back accordingly and what you get is a much shallower angle of attack on the front of your track. This helps keep the track form trenching and it really lets it just climb up onto the top of the snow.

On another note, I just remembered that the MPI tunnel gives you room for pretty much any track/driver combination and I took the opportunity to go to 9 tooth extroverts on my Viper. Certainly not nessecary, but a suggestion.

Hope this helps.

Tunnel or extension

If it were me I would do the extension over the tunnel. Just done a tunnel replacement what a pain in the a$$. Got about 10 hours in just R&R tunnel . the tunnel was bent replaced with the factory one .IMO the drop and rolled chain case is not worth it. A buddy of mine has a drop & rolled says he probably wouldn't do it again. Go to www.hartmaninc.com for everything great guy to deal with one on one You talk to him personaly

I agree that the extension may be a better route but I'm kind of looking for a learning experience too. I want to do a tunnel on this one before I tackle my M8. I'm also trying to make the sled a little more fun for my girlfriend to ride, its a little heavy for her now so I want to see if I can put it on a diet and make it handle a little better. I want to buy the above mentioned tunnel if we can get it all worked out. Probably a retarded plan, but its what I do I guess.

I'm about to order a new MPI tunnel, as I can't seem to find a used one. Does anyone know if Elkholm has a website or anything. I wanted to check out their stuff before I ordered anything.
