motor swap: 700 GEN II to Edge 800 chassis?

Donor sled is 99 RMK 700 Gen II 151" with kuhn carbs. I want to put that motor in my '02 Edge that had an 800 162" with rack carbs.

1. Want to stay with the rack carbs, but the elec. wont swap over. To swap the elec. I need to use the stator from the rack carb'd 800 motor. Will the 800 stator swap over to the 700?

2. I ride aggressive/climbing at 7,000-11,000ft. The 700 had twin pipes, the 800 single. What is the difference between single and twins?

3. What should I be looking to do as far as gearing/clutch? Would the 151" gearing with the 700 motor be acceptable for a 162"? Would the 162" gearing stay the same with clutching change? Any advice on weights/gears, etc. would be appreciated...

you can use the rack carbs, change the needles to what the 01 700 rmks used. don't use the the engine harness off the edge. you do not need to use the tps on the carbs. use the carb boots off of the 800. pipes use what fits. I have done this swap and I just used a single pipe for an edge chassis.

This was my original thought... talked to a Polaris dealer service dept. on the phone and they told me that it would affect the motor if I left it unplugged and used the 99 RMK 700 elec. Said I had to swap the stator and stay w/ the 800 Edge wireing and the TPS if I wanted to stay with the rack carbs. You did the SAME swap? The 700 carbs are NOT a rack setup, they're "stand alone"... and had no issues? Thanks for your reply and help... I noticed your reply involved '01 700? Was that an Edge or GEN II chassis? Mine is a '99 GEN II.

So there is no confusion...

I'm pretty sure the TPS is used by the CDI to change the timing depending on throttle position. So, if you're not using the 800 electrical and the 700's electrical doesn't have a TPS, there is no harm in leaving the TPS on the rack carbs unplugged because the 700 doesn't use a TPS. The actual carburation of air/fuel mixture has no dependence on the TPS.

As far as the 01 vs 99, I thought both were gen II's and that the Edge chassis didn't come out in the RMKs till 02'. Could be wrong there though.

use the rack carbs, the tps only affects the cdi, you will need to change the needles in the carbs to the same needles the 01 700 rmk had in them. that was the only year a non ves 700 had the rack carbs. The dealer is full of $hit. I did a swap with 01 into a 02 chassis but we have put the rack carbs on the older 700's also. Dealers are not always the best, alot of them have young guys out of high school who think they know alot and they really don't know much from my experiences

Good info "boardin"... Polaris dealer mentioned the timeing issue, but they may have been confused at what I was trying to explain as well? But what your saying is what I was thinking as well... 2 guys that have collaborated what was smokin in my head!... Jetting this thing thing is gonna SUK! Going from twins to single, the motor change...

Jetting isn't so bad, start fat, use piston wash to decide changes. Like RMKBoxer said, use the needles from an 01 700. Are you going to use a single pipe or twins? You should be able to look up main jet sizes for a non-ves 700 either w/ or w/o twins, just contact the exhaust maker or look it up on their website.

Not sure why the motor change would make jetting more difficult, forget the 800's jetting altogether since you're using the 700.

the jetting should be pretty close on it, the needle is a biggy or it will have a bog

So... thanks for the input, going to get the motor in and give 'er a go. How about gearing and clutch setup? 700 w/ 162".... what weights and gears?

Watch the angle of the y-pipe as well. Added valve cylinders to a 98 700 motor and ran into issues fitting the exhaust. Was able to retain my PSI twins, but the Rugland pipes I really wanted no longer fit. Most likely, you can use the pipe if the flange is the same diameter, but may need the y-pipe from the old motor.
