Hey all,

Well got my 09 dragon RMK 800 in the dealer gettin the motor update done, anyways they called said the two front motor mount bolts are broke. They wanted 400 bucks to replace them because they said they had to pull the motor.. Do you have to pull the motor to get to these bolts? Are the pain in the ***? Any tricks? Either way i'm doing it save alot of money. Anything to check while I have the motor out? Anything to watch for putting it back in?

Motors got to come out if it is the bolts that hold the motor to the mounting straps, which is probably what they are talking about. No way I'd be paying them $400 for something that I could easily do myself. Really nothing to it, just label stuff as you remove it and maybe take pics and notes.

I'd be more in favor of taking pictures of each step along the way and less likely to label. For the most part, connectors fit back to only their mate. I have a harder time remembering where things are plumbed, or where they are supposed to lay.

The front left bolt that bolts the motor mount to the chassis is notorious for breaking and if this is the case you don't have to pull the motor but it is kind of a PITA to get at it. Need to switch to a better grade bolt while replacing. I went to grade 9 but others are using I think it is called an ARP grade? There are threads about this in IQ section. maybe Increasing Your IQ thread

pretty easy label what plug wire goes to what plug, unhook the wires from the wire harness area not the motor. there are two sets of 2 wires one has a blue end and the other white those are the only 2 that can be mixed. check and probably repace the torque stop because its probably busted to chit. Looks more intimadating than it actually is just take your time and dont manhandle stuff. make sure to set torque stop right also and if they are the main motor mount bolts go with a grade 9 or 10 that ARE NOT fully threaded good luck its also a good way to know where everything is on the motor

My left front bolt broke 2 yrs ago on my 08 Dragon. Pull off the black rubber radius rod boot and you should be able to see the bottom of the bolt sticking through the hole. I shot some penetrating oil down the hole, let it set overnight and got to it with some needle-nose vice grips and channel locks. Couple of turns and it came right out. Good to get lucky once in a while. There's not a hell of lot of room in there, so you might want to loosen the radius rod in order to get the tools in there. I replaced the broken bolt with a higher grade bolt and never had another problem. Took me a year to find the broken part of the bolt. Tried magnets, coat hangers, tipping the sled on it's sides, but could never find it. Then one day it peeked out when I was cleaning the engine pan. The other 3 bolts were OK.

Hope this helps.

I elected to mark the plug cap on the PTO side and a corresponding dot on the air box to match. With the plug wires roughly the same length and shape I could see getting them confused.

?

How would you even know? Looked at mine and they seem fine. Seems to run fine and idle normal. How would you know?

What size bolts should I get to replace with? Also do I get thhreaded alll the way? Highest grade I can get?

The Motor Mount Thread

Here's the info on this from the past:

http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148649

I was able to replace my left front bolt on my 09 M8 without taking anything apart. It is a bit tight but do-able. I think I had to bevel the threaded end of the (McMaster-Carr) bolt slightly. I also had someone lift gently on the motor, the slight bit of deflection was enough to allow me to pop the new bolt in. With a drop of locktite on it.

The stock bolt is 150,000 psi with full threads (bad), the McMaster Carr bolt is 180,000 psi with a solid shank.

When I checked mine, the left front motor mount bolt was gone. The only thing there was a hole. And like I said, I found the broken piece a year later. What I've done now, is make a mark with some of the wife's red fingernail polish on top of the bolt head. I periodically look at them to see if (1) are they still there and (2) has the bolt turned and started backing off.

Broken bolt

When my LH front motor mount bolt broke, I replaced it with the bolt and nut plate from a 2010 ASSAULT motor mount set up. The bolt is a 7/16-14X2.25, the plate will cost an extra $17.71.

Good idea!

Dug up the pic of mine when it broke.
