I tried this on a big bull last season on my M1000, he knocked me off my sled and stomped on the front end. Was not pleasant. In all seriousness, I wasnt pushin him hard, but he was not liking being pushed AT ALL. I have gotten away with "steering" them to a fork in the trail or similar and have boondocked around a bunch without issue. But turns out this one was injured by a cat or wolves on his hind quarter and was already piszed off individual. New tactic is to carry a bat while riding that area now.

Throw some peppered beef jerky and a can of beer off to the side of the trail and pull over and let you by!
