montana gun laws???

i will be taking a motorcycle trip and will be alone for a few days. i was thinking of packing a gun but, i dont want to end up in jail.. how do they feel about carrying a gun (pistol) in the car or in the bag of the bike?

thanks!

Yup. In Montana you can go ANYWHERE with your gun on your hip...as long as it's not concealed....but stay out of the post office with it...unless you're wearing a badge at the time. LOL

Most states are open carry... doesn't mean you're not going to get stopped alot though. Open carry forum

You brought up a pet peeve... USPS, no "guns".. WTH? Maybe I want to protect myself from a worker going postal?? It is the employees, is it not? When is the last time you heard of someone other than an employee going ballistic in a the post office..? LMAO, some stuff just doesn't make any damn sense. They can KMA..

if you have a concealed weapons permit from another state you are good to go in MT subject to a few conditions mentioned in the link posted above.
Link appears to be a couple years old.............I dont know if anything has changed.

looks to me that you can carry a gun as long as its not concealed on your person?????? right or wrong?

you cant carry a gun(concealed) in a govt. building or in a mining camp.

but if your wife wants to go tell her to pack a gun in her purse its not concealed. legally in Montana its an accessory not clothing or attire.

MT gun laws are pretty sweet. Can't cover it with clothing without a permit, as far as open carry, be careful with a gun on your hip, there are some local laws that prohibit it. Wal-mart looks down on you carrying guns in there store. If you're from MT just go to the sheriffs office and get a CCW, its like $50 and takes a couple weeks to get. Montana law says that any citizen of sound mind w/o a felony conviction has the right to concealed carry. If you're worried, get the permit but as long as its in a bag or not under clothing you should be good to go.

Try to carry it on you when you can.. What are you worried about that you want a gun with?? A gun in the back of your bike isn't going to save you.. Get a CCW.

You can carry concealed outside the limits of an incorporated city or town as long as you are involved in a recreational activity,ie: hiking ,biking, hunting, fishing, fornicating, etc. Inside the city limits you should be o.k on your bike as long as it is in the bike. I do recall an instance where Evil Kneivl was cited in Helena in the early 80's for having violated a city ordinance for having a loaded firearm in a vehicle within the city limits of Helena. Concealed carry does state on your person, concealed by an article of clothing. I just would not be smart to be walking around openly packing a firearm around town. Even with a permit you can not carry in any type of bank, government building, or business where alcohol is served as the primary source of business.

there used to be a stat law that you could shoot an indian if you were riding in a covered wagon and felt threatened, i wonder if a pickup with a topper is good enough on that one,

also you can't have a gun around a railroad also (federal law)
