modding y pipe length ?

Your friend is wrong. 1" is a LOT.

Back in like 2000 SLP offered a shim to go in the 800 pipe between the pipe and the y-pipe that was about 1/4" long. At higher altitudes it made a big difference.

With the 07 700RMK when Carl's Cycle ported one you could put a 1/4" spacer in between the y-pipe and pipe and pick up a couple of sled lengths.

So changing it 1" is going to have a big affect.

I wouldnt change the y-pipe length, as it will change the overal length of the tuned pipe, and change the response of the wave action inside the pipe. Lengthening the total length will cause the pipe to respond at a lower RPM range, and an inch is a considerable amount in pipe tuning terms. I would do whatever you can think of without changing the length of the system. Perhaps a set of twins (tripples? What engine are you speaking of? LOL!), that way you could just straighten the bend in the divergent section of the pipe and gain the length you need for clearance without changing overall length of the pipe.
