modding the stock tunnel.

hey guys its summer project time and i'm ready to dig into my apex. unfortunatly hopes of boost this summer don't look promising (bought a new truck) so i looked at wat i could change on my sled and do some budget work. A new cr tunnel would be reaallly nice but i think the stock tunnel is just fine. The cast peice where the exhaust used to sit is large and heavy. Has anyone chopped out this piece and rebraced the tunnel or just put a sheet over top? I am using an excell mountain lite exhaust but i make work somehow. Is there a way to chop the cast peice out or is it really the backbone of the tunnel. if so i think theres potential to lose alot of weight.

thanks

spenser

p.s. any other budget ideas would be great.

that cast part comes out easy as, just remove the rivets and it comes right out. Just rivet a alloy sheet back over it and it will be as strong.
I took mine when I put in a under tunnel pipe. And yes you do save some weight.:)

do u think that the cast piece would be integral to the tunnel though? also i am running the timber suspension with their lite drop brackets. i don;t waant the tunnel to kink after i take it off. any ideas on how i could possibly brace it a bit just to retain/improve strength?

The rear of the sled, where the muffler sits
I cut it out to make room for the under tunnel exhaust. I latter removed it all together for more track clearance.

You do not need to reinforce the area once you remove it as the alloy sheet that goes on top will do the same job keeping it stiff.
I've been jumping mine with no probs to the tunnel.
If your worried use some alloy flat bar and rivet it along the inner sides.
