Missouri River flooding

Yesterday we went to the War Eagle overlook. And went to the 2nd exit into South Dakota and watched the Black Hawk Heli's come in and pick up sand bags. Then we went to Gavins Point Dam.....it is a heck of a sight.

The suction on the lake side of the dam is scary..

Every year it seems like the Red River Valley (think Fargo) is flooding to some extent. Every year there are volunteers from the college and community that without complaint throw their backs into the work. This shows an example of reward: 'I helped to save my town.'

Louisiana? A straight up, text book case of learned helplessness. Something that is acquired by years of whining and getting handouts from the government. Sad to say, but sometimes handouts aren't a good thing. There seemed to be limited initiative within to fight for their city. Thus they lost the 'reward.' Again, it could have been, 'I saved my town.'

To all those fighting the water, wherever it may be, a loud HUZZAH:clap2::clap2::clap2:!!

The spillway at Fort Peck is open and its still running over the top, a hell of a sight I guess. The corp wants to drop Fort Peck another 10-15 feet over the summer and into the winter to make room.for next years runoff. So ya Nebraska its coming, and will be for a long time. As someone else put it, rainfall filled our lakes, runoff is just starting to come in now, it's gonna be a wild summer.

I live near the garrison dam, in a week they will be pushing 150,000 CFS out of it and keep it there till August. There is alot of flooding going on here already, 8 million sand bags filled in bismarck/mandan.

Discharge from garrison dam

Spillway gates opening for the first time since the dam was built.

I was at Dakota Dunes for a couple of weeks in early June helping with Sand Bagging operations. One reason I was told the Army COE did not release a lot of water earlier in the season was the state of flooding in the Mississippi River in early Spring. Apparently barge traffic in the Mississippi is also a major factor in how the Army COE manages water flow in the Missouri. None the less a sad site for sure.
