miss and backfire

just put a new motor in and took it out for the first time. pulles way hard! but when i let off the gas it would back fire? then i had a miss and like half throttle. then at the end of the day it really got bad. check engine light is on and reverse is hard to get into.

Did you set/check your TPS after the motor install?
How many flashes on check engine light?

Back fire can be caused when unburned gas in the exhaust pipe ignites. Air leaks in your exhaust pipe can cause this.

pulled the plugs and they were both buckskin brown colored going to do a compresion test on it and take it to the dealer for a flash and to set/adjust the tps. also going to order new exhaust bellows. need some clutch work too. when it was running i noticed some exhaust smoke coming out of the pto side ves. with a quick glance at the bellow i dint notice any rips or tears wonder if this would cause the backfire. do they usually leak out of the top like that?

no they only leak like that if a bellow has a hole in it. big or small i had one that was pretty small took me a bit to find it.
