Miracle in SE Idaho tonight

I'll chime in now.. I just want to stress the importance of always bringing everything. There are so many times that we decide not to bring something (whether it be a shovel, probe, beacon, spare clothes, etc) all to save a couple pounds or a little inconvience. I almost talked myself out of bringing my backpack, all my spare clothes, shovel, and probe but i brought it anyways. I know that if i wouldn't have had my shovel, things would have been very different. I can't believe the amount of people that i see riding without these simple things. A backpack, a shovel, a probe these are all fairly inexpensive things, but they are so vital. I think the most important thing is just taking responsibility. Be responsible for yourself and those you ride with.

Wow, I've been there as well, it sure is steep but just doesn't have the feel of somthing that would slide. Do to the wind and thus drifting in that area we always have beacons up there.
I guess this means there is snow up there? Was is good other than the avy? Sorry if this is inapproperate.

glad your relativly ok!!

Glad everone is ok, hopefully everyone who reads this will learn from it and wear beacons. I have also rode in the mountains in area's I thought were safe areas without a beacon( because I never had a beacon). After reading and hearing stories like this (on Snowest) I purchase 4 beacons and probes for myself and my family and we practice with them all the time.;)

Well yeah there WAS snow up there. The only good snow up there was where we were riding but now it is piled up at the base of that hill. Might be a couple weeks before it gets good up there.

I never leave home without my gear(extra beacon+batteries) and refuse to ride with others who don't have it!
Been called an A**hole and lots of other things but after seeing 2 friends buried and know of a friend who died in the hills:eek:
I don't Fugg around with mine or others lives!
GUYS STAY SAFE SNOW IS A POWERFUL FORCE WE RARELY DEFEAT!:light:
Yet we challenge it everytime we go riding:D

Beacons (transeivers) are simply a tool....

I hear alot of talk of the need to wear a beacon. I disagree fully.

1st take an avalanche safety training course that teaches you how to use the beacon properly (instructions supplied are important but an approved instructor will be able to answer questions making sure you understand fully). The course should train you how to determine the avalanche risk level so you can make educated knowledgeable choices about whether or not to ride in avalanche areas in the first place. The more you know the safer you will be.

The beacon is no better than the knowledge the user has. This is life and death folks.

I just took the in class training portion and what an eye opener. There is so much a person does not know that the training provides.
I consider a person (including myself) a total fool if you ride without training and the proper safety gear.
Think of this. If your riding buds (you need at least 4 to be safer in avalanche areas) are not trained. Who will save your life? MR Luck?

Invest some time and a bit o cash in safety and chances are you will be around to sled again...next year. But make sure your buds are trained and you do dry runs using the beacons so you have experience and are ready. During an avalanche is not the time for your buds to be training to find you buried. Think about it! :light:

Thanks a million for the posts. I copied the main posts and sent to our club members down here in SW Colorado.

So glad this came out ok, and thankfully only became a reminder for all of us.

Glad you're still here. Man all you guys, please not another year like the last couple.

Glad your still here man, and even more glad that your buddies didn't have to dig out a dead body. Trust me, that's something that will never leave your mind. Lost alot of lust for sleddin' that day............and is was on a "little" hill that no-one thought would ever slide or had ever seen slide. Preach the lesson.
