Learned about this in class the other day and found it very interesting so I thought I would share. They pretty much have wells drilled into a coal seam, then inject one well with a mixture of common chemicals used in food processing. The natural occurring bacteria and microbes in the seam break down this mixture and turn it into methane. The methane is then flows out through a separate well. Sorry its not the most in depth description, but definitely a very interesting technology that could help supply future energy needs.
Here is a link to the company's website, I has I much better description of the process. http://www.lucatechnologies.com/technology.php
They say it is sustainable, which I'm not sure what they actually mean by that. If none of the coal is actually used, I don't see why this wouldn't be a renewable resource. I'll try to get some answers.
