Melted Plastic, Recoil Rope, and SLP can?!!

Went for a ride today to check out the new Pow Pow and the wheels fell off! The belt didn't blow, but cords are hanging out! I just had Indy Specialty go through both the primary and secondary Dan put in a new Helix 60/40 .46 Black/Green Drive Spring and Black/Purple in the Driven. Clutches were real hot. The recoil rope melted (of course right before the knot) so it's now in the recoil housing! and the plastic where the pull handle goes is melted.

Is the clutching right?
Is the heat on the exhaust side due to the SLP Can?
Due I need to pull the motor to get to the Recoil Housing?

Could this all be caused by heavy wet snow?
 
Sounds like there must be something seriously wrong there. Heavy wet snow could do a couple things, make your clutches get hotter because the sled has to work harder and plug the vents in the front of the hood.

If the hood vents get plugged it will get to hot under the hood and melt stuff. I know because mine did it. Install more vents.

Vents plugged could cause area around pipe to get to hot and melt stuff. Again more vents.

Check plugs to make sure sled is not running to lean, Were you watching the temp gauge? Was it running hot.

Did you check the alignment of your clutches?

Cover all plastic that goes anywhere near the exhaust with heat tape.

What belt are you running? if the last number are not 11115 you need a different belt too.

you should be able to pull rear motor mount bolts, then take two out of the front and leave two in loose then carefully tip the engine forward to remove the pull starter.

Does you SLP can look discolored at all? Check for cracks on the top of the can. I had this happen to me a few times and the crack lets air in a causes a fire in the can then things get very hot.
 
I run the 1115 belt. The belt did have 700 miles. I toggle to the temp gauge most of the time. On the ride the temp never got above 129. So the motor was not running hot. How to I align the clutches on this thing?
 
700 miles is not too terribly bad IMO... I managed to get 1100 miles out of my 1115 last year before replacement (pulled a string loose). Keep in mind that these motors have the most stock torque of any Polaris engine to date.
 
That Helix is not much different than stock. Did IndyDan recommend that to you? He told me second number 46 was very important for the 900.

Black green is 140-220, that is lighter than stock I was told go heavier on driven spring.

What can is everyone running. I'm about ready to give the SLP can the boot!

Most people are running the CPI, but is it to dang Loud. Everyone has good things to say about the SKINZ Super-Q and Ultra-Q.
 
I gave Dan my rider wieght of 200# and 10,000 ft elevation, 70% hillclimb, 30% boondock, spinning at 7700-7800 RPM. That was how he set me up. The number on the box that came back from Dan is 60-40-46-E 60-38-46-E. What do you think?

Also attached is a pic of the belt.

Trim the cord and use it for a spare. Put a new belt on. Wash it with hot soapy water, dish soap works good and scrub it, then let it dry. Clean any old belt residue off the clutches. Break the belt in slowly.

The number on the box doesn't necessarily mean that is the helix number. What does it say on the back of your driven clutch? 64-38-36 was stock.
 
I pulled the plugs, they look fine. If anything it looks like I'm running a little rich, but I run 100:1 premix with injection and I pulled the plugs from the sled in my garage, not hot. It is definitely not running lean. I guess I'll order a new console plastic, silencer, pull rope and heat tape the heck out of everything.

Do you think the new clutching could be causing the belt burn down? However I usually replace the belt each year and have not done so this year. Advise?
 
You should have put on a new belt with the new clutch work because your old belt is probably worn and no longer the same width it used to be. Set your belt deflection.

What kind of vents do you have? I melted the side of my sled on a deep powder day when the vents got plugged up. Check the vents and clean them off when you stop and check temp under hood. On warmer days I open the hood if I stop.

Heat tape the hell out of everything.
 
I just have the SLP hot air elimination kit, which is basically shock tower vent and vents in the rear of the side panel. That is going to change shortly! What side vent and hood vent are most using?

I installed side panel vents after the melting. I have all kinds of vets though. Vent in back of side panel, vents were storage compartments used to be, hood vents, HRP shock tower vents.

Didnt you notice a smell something like how candles smell when they burn when all this was going on? As for the SLP can I have seen SLP cans have broken baffles inside that makes them restrictive and they then run CRAZY hot and melt everything under the hood. If you have the stock can put it back on and see what happen's then. It just might be your problem.

Also that belt appears to have been slipping really bad see how the sides are all glazed. First check your belt deflection to make sure that its correct for your new helix. Also how are you motor mounts? Can you move the motor at all? Pulling up on the primary is a good indication of their condition.
 
I would avoid the stock can on a 900 at all costs. That thing weighs 25 lbs and is the size of a small suitcase.

No you don't smell a thing when it melts. Your lucky if you even notice it.

Running the old belt and not setting the belt deflection could have caused the excessive slipping on the belt and also cause the clutches to get very hot.
 
Your right! You don't smell a thing until it's over and done!! I just pulled on my primary in every direction and the motor is solid.
