Melted Plastic, Recoil Rope, and SLP can?!!

In addition to the excellent points above...

What year is your 900?

Did you carefully check the condition of the front and rear motor mounts, bolts etc?

Did you set the belt deflection?

Has the sled EVER been wrecked or hit a tree?

Do you still have the little rope guide "pulley" mounted to the motor side plate?

I would avoid the stock can on a 900 at all costs. That thing weighs 25 lbs and is the size of a small suitcase.

No you don't smell a thing when it melts. Your lucky if you even notice it.

Running the old belt and not setting the belt deflection could have caused the excessive slipping on the belt and also cause the clutches to get very hot.

I realize that the stock can is heavy, but if you put a new can on and it melts everything under the hood right there after I would think you would at least like to try to eliminate that can from the possible culprit of the problem even if it is 25lbs less than stock. Weight savings doesn't make much of a difference if the can if melting everything under the hood. As for the smell, anytime I;ve had pipes close to a hood or side plastics I sure could smell it.

I did not set deflection when I got the clutches back from Dan.
The sled is a 2006 151".
The sled did hit a tree 350 miles ago. not very hard, but hard enough to break the plastic bumper. It now has a Skinz bumper. Everything seemed to line up on install.
How do I inspect motor mounts without pulling the motor?
How big of a job is it to pull the Motor?

no way to do it without pulling the motor. The heat problem was more than likely caused by your front vents getting plugged and your heat shield is obviously gone that protects the pull start rope and dash plastic. If you remove heat shielding you have to put heat tape on in it's place.

The belt had 700 miles on it, that is more than I have ever got out of a belt on this machine. I might have got more out of the 1115 belt but I changed it to a new belt to be safe and because the other had worn down from the original width. If your old belt is narrower than a new belt you were not getting optimal performance from your clutching. If you did not take the old belt and scrub it with hot soap and water before installing it, it will not work correctly.

I rode mine for a year with it set up the same way it was when it melted everything with no melting. It melted on a day with 6 feet of fresh powder were the only way you could even go was WFO and all the vents on the front of the sled got plugged so there was no airflow through the hood.

If you put the stock can back on this sled and you have a day with heavy snow and hard riding it will get hot too, except it is so large it blocks all airflow under the hood and it melts your chaincase cover because it sets so close. Another can other than an SLP might help because everything is smaller than the SLP and they allow more airflow.

Before you do anything you need to lift or pull the motor to fix your pull start and if your dash is melted bad enough pull your dash. Might as well go ahead and spend just a little more time and verify your motormounts are good. The buy or borrow a clutch alignment bar and make sure everything is lined up right. Hitting the tree could have knocked something out, bad motormounts could have it out and the Polaris dealer just flat out not adjusting it or doing it wrong could have it out of alignment.

Can follow Up

ZW....you stated earlier people are having luck with "SKINZ Super-Q and Ultra-Q."

What is your opinion SLP vs Skin-Z... I want to upgrade next spring with mods but want to do the best thing for machine. Does SkinZ need dealer update too?

CPI sounds too loud for my area...There are no Mountains here.:face-icon-small-sad

I haven't had any personal experience with the skinz cans, just heard good things from others on here. I plan to get an ultra-Q because I want my sled quieter. Anybody want to buy a CPI Can?

I've heard good things about the Dynoport Big Volume too but don't know any mountain riders with them.

Now might be a good time to upgrade your pull rope. I just ordered an Armorcord one off ebay. They are the same price everywhere but ebay was the cheapest shipping I have found. They are supposed to be indestructible. I even saw one test were the stuck a set of armorcord boot laces on the bar-B-Q and they didn't melt.

Ice age was selling the cords but looks like they don't have them anymore. Here is the ebay one. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...49981&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_500wt_1156

I purchased 3/16" winch rope for my recoil. Did two sleds and still have a good tow rope for an emergency.

Well, I installed a synthetic winch cable for my pull rope, replaced the cracked and broken SLP can with an MBRP can, put on a new 1115 belt and adjusted deflection and went for a ride. This sled rips! clutches were just warm to the touch. The MBRP can sounds sweet, i can't tell that it is that much louder that the SLP and the sled seems to like it better. The rope replacement was a beast. You do not have to pull the motor to replace the rope. It does take a wobble head hex head and alot of patience. I tossed the bottom screw as far a i could once i got it out! After two rides in 2+ of powder, I am up and running a loving the 900 again.

Thanks for the update. Nice to hear someone having good luck right now. I thought the sled performed worse with the SLP can too. Dyno-port told me when they tested it on the Dyno the sled actually lost 5 hp with the SLP can on it.
