MCXpress Turbo WR450

I was told today that MCX is working with Yammie to build a kit for the 450. The 5 valve setup is a good match for a turbo application. My source said the turbo was very compact and would tuck up in the rear frame area. Any one else heard anything? Any one want to buy a Tapex?:face-icon-small-hap

He didn't say. Shouldn't be too difficult to put on a carbed motor. Just need a fuel controller. MCXs were put on RX1s at the beginning. Lots of guys are turboing carbed 2 strokes so it should be doable.

Someone needs to build a bolt on for a KX450. I heard that Boondocker is close to releasing a kit for the YZ450. I don't have any problem with the Yamaha bikes, but both of them have traits that just don't translate to snowbiking as well as other bikes would. The YZ has the air intake issue which is problematic for the winter, and the WR's transmission gearing isn't ideal for snowbiking (well, in it's stock form. Double the HP and the issue might be moot).

I'll sure as hell watch some videos that might change my mind. My problem is I promised my wife I wouldn't buy another toy for 2 seasons. Don't make me get in trouble again!

What does your KX weigh with the MH? 250#? 100hp. Thats 2.5 lbs/hp. Thats getting close to what my Apex is at 310. You know you want a bike like that!!!!

Like I said the HP would probably change the issue with gearing.... heck, 3rd is a long gear on the WR and if you are under a steep, deep pull it won't rev under that heavy load. Add 50HP and I bet that problem is fixed!

I curious about the problematic YZ air intake, Im thinking that its up higher and away from the track? Its heated,,well sort of! Its a pain to get to But Im thinking about loosing the filter all together and just using the outerware and a cage?

perfect, no filter under the cage, just the prefilter on top. that worked the best, i would cover the intakes on the shrouds as well with prefilter.

also need to figure out a way to keep the shrouds from flexing out, thats where i got the most snow coming in from, was underneath.

Visited MCX today and spoke with Eric.
Their shop is only 400 meters from where I live :face-icon-small-ton.
Unfortunately it was a little disappointing.
He told me that MCX are not working on a new turbokit for any single cylinder dirtbike, at least not for now.
MCX makes turbokits mainly on fourstroke snowmobiles and UTV's.

Lets hope that MCX will see the potential in this fairly young snowbike market.

TWIN AIR?

anyone tried one of these with a prefilter? we sell quite a few of these for the dirt guys....im thinkin it would work well for the snow as well but curious if anyone has tried...

no nos

no, that is a replacement air box/cage/filter kit for the efi yz's from twin air. gets rid of the the flat filter and adapts to a regular cage/filter for better filtration and airflow. but my thoughts are it would work well for snowbiking with a prefilter on the filter and intake tract

Deleting the airbox and going to a pod or snorkel setup is hands down the best air intake option for snobikes. I fought an airbox for to long before I deleted mine and I won't be putting it back on.

I'm curious about the issues with the airbox as well on the new Yamaha. I'm running an 09, but would like to upgrade for the fuel injection, and some more power. I think the new Yamaha would be sweet with a turbo under the seat with the backwards motor! I saw where the guy did a turbo on a Honda, but I'm not sure i like the way everything is out front of the engine...

I've built, owned, wrenched on and been involved with quite a few Yamaha turbo sleds over the years and I've been giving some thought to the carbed turbo option for the dirt bikes. I've owned several of the main manufacturers carbed turbo kits and have built my own for carbed sleds and they basically all work the same. I don't think doing a carbed bike would be any big deal, it would just be a matter of using the right carb. All that has to be done is pressurize the float bowl with boost and they increase the fueling on their own. There are no maps to figure out and dick with it's just getting your jetting set up which is a piece of cake with a wideband. Off boost you are on the pilot and the needle, on boost its all through the main jet.

The plumbing would be simple way less welding and fab work than on my Nypex. As for a carb I was considering using one carb from an Rx1 as they already have an electric heater and a coolant heat pass through, 2 problems already solved and they have proven themselves to be excellent in blow though applications. One question I'd have is if it could be jetted big enough.

The Yamaha would be a great choice as the dirt bikes basically use the same valve train (which I'm intimate with, LOL) as the sleds, you'd simply set exhaust valves to the outside of the spec and go. I've not ridden a turbo bike but if its anything like a sled gears won't matter one bit, enough boost and it could be direct drive.

What some guys fail to realize is that when you boost a motor you only loose roughly .5% of the HP per 1000 feet of elevation gain where normally aspirated both fuelie and carb you are loosing 3% per 1000 feet, so the increase from boosting is way more than what you are riding right now. Your 60 hp dirt bike at sea level is making maybe 45 hp at elevation at best where the turbo bike at 7 lbs will make way over 80 HP so pretty much double and at 7lbs the Yami will be deadly reliable.

There would need to be some math done as far as boost vs octane but again piece of cake, worst possible case is you make a 60 thou headshim increase the valve overlap and done. I have a 15G Mitsu turbo here looking for an application????

Food for thought.

I've ridden my home made turbo kit the last season.
It works very well and no big issues. The engine seems to hold up. Very powerful, lot of torqe and FUN!
Running stock compresion and race gas.
Thinking of lowering comp. ratio for pump gas.
The problem is that the cam chain is too short and the tensioner bottoms out. For that reason a chim is not possible, at least for the KTM.
Investigating the option of getting a custom made lowcomp piston.
MCX have ordered from JE pistons for some of their Polaris UTV.
Hoping that it's possible for the KTM500.

I think that making snowbike turbo kits is a small market, at least for now. MCX told me that when they design a turbo kit, there is a break even point at 40-50 units. I dont know if that is correct figure but producing one off kits will be very pricy....
KMS and hopefully Boondocker will offer us snowbikers some great kits!
