Elway didn't call many of his own plays. Reeves never allowed that. Reeves fired Shanny originally because him and Elway were making up plays. Even when Shanny was the head coach, him or Kubiak did all the play calling. Elway had the option to audible out of a play if he had a read at the line of scrimmage but Shanny had the final say on plays.
I agree that he is a leader but there is more to coaching than that. You don't start off in the NFL as a HEAD coach with no coaching experience (on a professional level). If he was to work his way up from say a QB coach, to offensive coordinator, I would be open to it. I would thoroughly be disappointed if Bowlen made him the head coach. Being that his father was a scout for the Broncos, I would think he would have a better fit as a GM. Even then I am not sure I want him to be the GM, maybe a scout or director of player personal would be better.
I really like Gruden, Cowher and Jeff Fischer. All would be long shots.
Cowher hasn't showed a lot of interest in coaching, Fischer is under contract but there is trouble in paradise and Gruden supposedly want to wait one more season, which would allow his son to finish high school.
There has been some rumors about Urban Meyer. He is a great coach, but not sure his style is suited for the NFL.
