Making a Dragon Fly!!!

Project 09 dragon 800 sp

I have my motor out and I’m getting ready to make this dragon fly! I’m just looking for some answers to some questions and or opinions. First I'll tell you about the sled. It’s a 09 dragon 800 sp 121. has 2800 miles, 1500 miles since 2010 update and has Feb. reflash, 144 stud in the sled werx pattern, I ride at 0-3000’. Very aggressive trail. I have read increasing your IQ, SLP tips, SLED-WERX and most of the Polaris IQ threads on snowest and hardcoresledder since I got the sled in 08.
My plan as of write now is to tear motor down and inspect everything. Then take some measurements and do calculation to figure out port timing. Then port it and do some crank case work, purchase an after market head that uses stock cover and some reeds. I’m going to have the stock pipe mod done at BMP. Then PCV and go to DYNO TECH. Looking for stock look. Kind of a sleeper. Might even put 600 decals on it! He! He! He!
Ok here are the questions.
1. What reed to get? I hear and read that Vforce don’t last long in this motor. Is this true for most people? And if so what other reeds do you recommend, have no experience with any others.
2. Question. Head suggestions. Does anybody have any opinions on the Terra Alps billet heads or RK tech heads or even BMP or SLP heads. I have never bought an aftermarket head.
3. Porting. My engine builder knows porting. His engines and porting has matched Doug Flannery’s. If you no Polaris you will no that name. But this will be his first 800cfi motor. Just wondering if there is anything with the 800 CFI motors that would be different from older twins when it comes to porting them? Also I was wondering about case porting. I hear this allot but always wonder if it’s the same as porting the jugs in a sense. Only reason I ask is I’m used to stuffing the cases to make less volume. Is this something that is different with the new twin as compared to the older ones?
4. Is BMP the only company that does a stock pipe mod? And any suggestions on removing the heat shield so it can be put back on later.
5. Also looking for suggestions on anything else I should replace on sled while motor is out.
6. Can you play with the timing on this sled?
7. Has anybody tried the 05 iq 900 roller chain tensioner in the dragon?
I am going to take this sled to Dyno Tech when done to make a custom map on PCV. I will keep everybody up to date on my finale decisions. Will also post dyno info as long as it’s ok with Jim.
I would also be open to testing any performance products for any companies while at the dyno shop. Please contact me if interested.
Hope I’m not asking too many questions. This is my first real post after reading for 2 years. I’m still not sure what ttt means or how to PM. I also think this will be fun and I’m excited. Thanks!!

P.S. sorry about my grammar!

The fellas at Carl's Cycle are telling us to get Carbon Tech reeds to go with their porting or big bore package. I don't know about the others, but the RKT head is not a "sleeper" design, but the one that I had on my Edge 700 was a high quality piece. Don't know what to tell you on the porting. As for ttt, it means "to the top". This is how to send a thread to the top of the section. And to do a PM, you click on the name of the user on the site (if it is in a thread) and a menu will drop down. Click on the "send a private message" and you will get another screen. Good luck with the machine, and click on my name to try the pm feature.

best mod

Well I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. The best mod you could do to the stock pipe is to put a turbo on the end of it. I put the bd turbo kit on mine and it was the best money I have ever spent. It will scare you every time you go out. It still does for me.

Thanks for the help and the info! I have heard allot of good things about the carbon tech reeds. I'm kinda leaning towards them or seeing if we can fit some bigger reeds in this motor. I think Arctic cat and some ski doo reeds are bigger. I just need to get my hands on some and see if we can make them work some how.

go with brad's heads!

I heard a rumor that Brad was in a terrible accident, is he even making any more products?

Update

So far I have decided to go with the Power Addiction head for this build. I am purchasing the head from Fastrax Motor sports, along with one of his IQ motor plates. Last year one of my motor straps broke and caused a few cracks where the front mounts go into the bulk head. The porting is going good. There are some good ponies to gain there! I’m also sending the injectors to Witch Hunter Performance to have them cleaned and flow tested. I also sent the stock pipe to BMP for the MOD. I’m having issues with deciding on reeds. I’m leaning towards using the stock ones. All the bottom pedals were chipped on the edges of the stock ones. I’m wondering if any body has tried the boyseen reeds and how long do they last. I don’t want to have to worry about reed pedals breaking. Does anybody have any info? Also sending my clutch to Indy Specialties to get it balanced. We think we can get into the 170 HP range on pump gas with this motor. We will see what the dyno has to say. I’m doing a few other things to, like all shocks revalved, skinz float plate, new USI X2 skis, PCV and some vents. I’ll keep everybody posted on the build. I am open to suggestion also.

Hear is a pic of the 13.5-1 compression head i just purchased from Brad.

Update

Quick update. Got all of my go fast parts in! Power Addiction 12.5 head, Fastrax IQ motor plate, Injectors back from Witch Hunter, Stock pipe mod from BMP, and Freshly rebuilt and balanced clutch from Indy Specialties, shocks from Steve Mathewson suspension Systems, Skinz float plate! All of the companies mentioned were very helpful and great to deal with. Thanks!! Couple miner setbacks. Mag side piston had scuff marks on bottom of intake skirt! Think maybe a piece from the chipped reeds. Ring gaps were .020 - .022.after 13k -14k miles. Cylinders are fine. Luckily my Awesome dealer (Jan-Cen Motor sports) got the pistons and the reeds warranted, along with my whole Chassis do to the cracks by the front motor mounts. That’s service! I just got motor back to start porting. Pistons are going to Swain Tech for ceramic coating. Can’t wait to get it together!

reeds

my reeds did the same thing, also wrecked both pistons, dealer warrantied pistons and reeds, awesome service, can't wait for a ride

piston coating

Can anybody tell me what type of coating is on top of the stock cfi 800 pistons?
Also wondering if anybody out there has tried ceramic coatings on the pistons, head and exhaust ports with these motors. I’m wondering if this would help keep heat out of the motor and allow it to run cooler and have less detonation. I’m planning on sending my parts to swain tech this week. I have asked a few people about this and I keep getting different answers. Some say just do the pistons. I definitely think its cheap insurance for the pistons. If anybody has any input I would greatly appreciate it!

Dyno time

I'm scheduled to go to Dyntech this Saturday the 8th. I will be trying a dynaport, slp aeen, and stock bmp mod pipes.while there and a few other things like capping of the exhaust vales and maybe a few different springs. Casey Mulkins might be joining us also. Can't wait!!:face-icon-small-ton:face-icon-small-hap:

DTR results

Dyno date went excellent!! First run stock pipe BMP mod with April flash was 164 hp @ 8200. Then with PCV 168 hp @ 8200. Then with dyno port pipe stock muffler 165 @ 8200. Then with PCV 168hp 8100 – 8300. Dyno port pipe and can with PCV 170.3 @ 8200 & 170.1 hp @ 8300. 170.3 trail ridable HP!!! I think we could get a few more with a few little things. This was all done with the stock cooling system around 120-130 degrees f. Can’t wait to clutch and ride this bad boy!!! :becky::clap2:
