Wife downloaded skype on her computer but now she cant find where the icon went to open it. Shows up I guess in recently used programs but cant click. Its not in applications or anything where would it save too?

when you download it, it is a .dmg file. It mounts the file to your hard drive. If you click on the mount, a folder will come up with asking you to install the software.
To install you just drag and drop the skype icon into your applications folder. (Should be shown in the folder that comes up.)
Once it is copied there, go to your applications directory.
mac hd, applications..
When you see the icon there, you can send that icon (in your applications directory) to the dock.

FYI, installing programs on a mac is MUCH MUCH different then on windows. There is no registry, no installation setup. You just copy the program to where you want to run it, and away it goes. Deleting it is the same. Very smooth and eloquent, IMO.
