M8 or M1000

I

IDAHO HOT SHOT

Well-known member
Im a long time Poo rider thinkin about getting a cat next year. Enlighten me, M8 or M10. I like to boondock and climb short n steep. Hills with trees are the best, im not a real big fan of point and shoot or long boring straight up hill beating. I also like to jump around and just give her hell in the meadows. Let me know what you think

sounds like your an M8 sort of guy, unless you are going to be doing a lot of modding, then you would probably want to go with the m1000.

if ur gonna get a 2010 get an m8 ive been told from a reliable source that they walk away from a 09 1000 w pipes an boondocker box also lighter

if you are going to go turbo, go with the m8 as it has a good knock sensor, and the m1000 doesn't have one at all. will be harder to burn down the m8.

if you are going to do a slp kit, get the m1000 as you will gain more power and the 1000 has a lot more torque.

other than that, the m1000 is a little heavier and a bit harder to throw around. if you are a bigger guy, this won't matter though.:beer;

if your going to mod go with the 1000, otherwise the 8 ,,
i dont see a 800 even with 160 hp besting a piped 1000 with 175 hp and more tourqe ( about 20 % more) .

Some sleds are heavy but dont ride heavy, does the m10 ride heavy. Ive ridden one for about 5 minutes and that was an 07 when they were new. I had an M8 that year and I wasnt impressed by it to much

I would say M8 for your ridding style. Today I rode with an M7 race gas turbo @10 lbs. 162 power claw, an 09 1200 big bore race gas turbo @10lbs. 162 power claw, and an 07 M1000 162 challenger. we did some big hills and alot of tight trees. Your ridding style sounds alot like mine. I like climbing hills, jumping, boondocking, riding in the trees. I think my sled is perfect for what I do 09 M8 153. Today on the other hand I felt I was out of my league. Those turbo sleds would climb chutes that you see on thunderstruck. I thought the 153 might be a little better in the trees, today I was proven wrong the 162 does NOT have any disadvatage in the trees. If the snow was deeper I think the 162 would be even better in the trees. I could not out turn any of them in the trees. I have allways thought that my M8 would take me places that I need not be, today proved that. The only advatage the bigger sleds have is that they can climb the really big chutes that I don't want any part of. I'll keep my M8 but I might put on a SLP pipe for those few deep snow days. sorry my reply is long but wanted to share my experience of engines and track length.

Good to know. I just bought a 162 PC track just in case I dont buy a cat next year. Thanks for the info, the more the better.

If you are going turbo go with the m8, a pump gas m8 will beat a slp piped m1000, If your down around 5000ft the don't beat them by a lot but the turbo just keeps pulling, race gas for some real fun. My 09 m1000 should be "rated" around 200hp and weighs as much as a stock 09 m8. I have a slp kit, bd box, bdx intake, bdx oil delete and a few other things the only diff I can tell between a m8 and m1000 is a loss in power. But, I'm a bigger guy, where are you located, if your close and seem competent I'll let you ride it, to compare. It is night and day between a 07 or 08 m1000. It all depends on rider stile, But one thing is for sure if your not a skilled tuner you don't want a m1000, sometimes theres no issues and sometimes it is a pain in the a$$. I am just getting mine to really open up and still think there is more to gain. Its the best boondocking sled I've ever road, I have not ridden a turbo because I can't afford one so I just stay away.

M8, with the new motor can't see any reason to get the 1000. especially since 10 will probably be the last year for the 1000. my dealer has a lot of M1000's left and not one M8...

I forgot to mention I weigh 170lbs. if I were 250lbs.+ I would go with the M1000 or mod the M8. I gave my daughter a ride in the deep powder once she's 100lbs. and man did my sled feel like a turd. It still went ok just really under powerd not as much fun with 270lbs. plus our gear about 30lbs.

I'm 6'2" and 160 lbs, and I love my M1000. The difference in weight is the same as the weight loss from my MBRP can, so now I am at the same weight as a same year stock M8 just by putting a can on my 1000, but have about 20 more hp. I absolutely love the torque of the 1000, and whether the 2010 800 has more power or not it will never have the same torque. Riding through the trees in deep powder I find the torque to really make a difference as you can slow down and pick your line and ease into it again without getting stuck or trenching. I reccomend the 1000 but it is not the sled for everyone.

The m1000 is listed at 31bls more than the m8, full slp on m1000 drops 16lbs so I don't think you'd be the same weight as a stock m8 with a can.

the stock 09 m1000 works, I have not been impressed with stock 07 08 m1000s but very impressed with modded 07 08's. The only m8 (09) I've really been impressed with is a few with slp full exhaust bd box, porting and clutched perfect, but still doesn't out perform a slp 09 m1000, but dang close. Although the guy with the modded m8 has more money in it than I do on my m1000.

heeres the problem with asking for advise on this forum everyone is a genius on the computer but make what u can of the comments cuz who knows some people may not even own a snowmobile lol

I own my sled and if anyone that I consider competent wants to ride it is welcome to join me and take it for a spin. I only give info I know as real life results. But the biggest thing to consider is are you capable of making the sled run the way you want, or the area you ride, snow conditions, barometric pressure, rider weight, elevation and so on are crucial as to how these sleds perform. The sleds I compare to are as good as I've seen but there could be better. Like he said you have to take what you can get but in the real world it may be different when it comes right down to it. With that said I ride a 09 m1000 for a reason.

I would go with the M8 if boondocking is your thing. The M1000 will boondock anywhere the 8 will go, but its a little heavier up front. Also, the 2010 M8 is exactly identical in power in an uphill drag race as my 08 M1000, raced them several times last weekend.
