M7 vs. D7 - which one to buy and why?

Okay guys. I have been riding an old 2000 MM700 for years - ported, piped, etc. It goes good but I am sick of jetting it and moving the pig when I get stuck - let alone it is pretty heavy to manuever in the deep stuff. I live in midwest and ride out west about 2 times a year. Time for an upgrade. Budget is about 4k and want something that will go good out west but I could ride around here too - 153 or 155 max track length.

I have a lead on a nice 2006 M7. For about another 1k I could get a 2008 D7 - similar miles on both.

Which one would you recommend and why? I have not ridden either. The big thing for me is reliability. People can rip on my mm all day but I have towed more people with that thing and it has never left me stranded (aside from when I blasted a tree:)).

Please give me some honest feedback, pros / cons of both.

Thanks.

Jon

I'm a huge M series fan, but if you are going to do much trail riding the newer dragon has much better suspension. I've ridden both and in the steep and deep I like the Ms better but much trail riding thrown in and I think the D7 would be better

M7 all day, those things are some of the best running stock sleds and they just keep on ticking for a LONG time. the 06's are a rock solid sled that will not let you down.

I definitely love my 700 RAW, great handling in all conditions and all around a great sled.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the m7s lack reverse?

M7 is a seriously reliable sled that is light and easily modded. Reverse isn't needed.

I've had both (still have the 2008 RMK700 polaris). Had 6000 miles on my m7 when I got rid of it. M7 is better on the hill and in difficult quick situations (lighter). RMK 700 is better and more comfortable on the trail (big time). If I had a choice at the same price I'd do the Polaris.

thanks. Keep opinions coming.

thanks all. I probably would not ride this a ton on trails. A D7 is about 1k more too. I am sure both will be light years ahead of the handling of my mm.

D7 all the way. The IQ chassis is great, has electronic reverse, and was a great overall sled. M7, to me I hated that chassis, just boring. M7 also had the bogging issue that really never was corrected. D7 didn't have any horrible condition and probably one of the better and more reliable sleds built by Polaris.

M7 bog issue? Maybe you had something going on, but our two M7s are flawless!

For what it's worth.....

I currently own 2 06 M7's and a 07 D7. Can't really say anything bad about either one. All are 100% stock except for a can and relocation brackets on rear of M7's. Capabilities are very similar. Reverse on the Polaris can be really nice at times.

In stock form, I tend to prefer the polaris just because it has a little better ergonomics to me, (higher bars, higher seat, etc) it has a much snappier bottom end, and the suspension is much better on the trail. I know all of these things can be improved on the m7's with a little extra investment.

From a reliability perspective, I have more faith in the M7 than the D7. I hear the D7 is a reliable sled too, but I haven't had as much experience with it.

D7 has wider side panels which can cause it to wash out quicker on a really steep side hill. Most of the time, this isn't a problem, and it can contribute to the fun factor when doing powder turns.

M7's have challenger tracks which are a little softer... maybe a little better in powder, but don't hook up as good in some of the harder sierra cement.

You'll be happy with either one.

Have a 2005 M7 which has been a great sled. Friend has an 06 M7 and that thing can flat out go. He has done a ton of mods, basically set up like a 2010 minus the newer motor. I love the M7. No experience with Dragon. Good luck. Either way you will enjoy the upgrade.
