m7 opinions

I have been out of ridding for a while. About 10 years. I recently picked up a 04 mxz rev extended out to 151. I will use it for my backup sled. I was going to pick up a 09 carry over xp this fall. Was always a skidoo guy but seems all the manufactures have stepped up there game. I have someone who would like to trade a 05 m7 for my 06 kawi 450 dirtbike I took in on a partial trade. It has slp pipes, reeds, boondocker box, ect. My question to you guys is with a couple grand into it how well will perform compared to the 08-09 xp's, dragons, ect. Not looking to be king of the hill but have a good sled that will hang with the new stuff. Or am I better off getting rid of the bike and using the money towards a new ride. Looking at maybe rkt's 800 big bore for the m7. Supposed to be about 180 ish on the horse power. Any opinions or advice would be great. Looking forward to get back on the snow this winter. Thanks

It will hang with the 8's. It may not beat them but it will hang with them. The guy in our group with an M7 goes basically everywhere the M8's will go.

My dads 06 M7 works retarted well, never has issues, runs hard, keeps up with everyone always.

rkt 800 BB and its a ripper, buddy is gonna be getting one this summer, so well see how well it does.

if the pipes on that one work right then it will run HARD, bone stock they rock, so any mods and they are even better.

the stock 7 is an over achiever for a 7 and will run with most 8s but low on mid power so if you can give it a little time to wind up she's a goer. this is the most maneuverable sled for the size and will blow your mind how well it side hills and turns in the trees and pow. And a very reliable sled so mile aren't a big deal with it. Keep up with basic maintenance of the DD and clutch turn down the oil pump to 40 to 1 and just rod the piz out of it and have fun. BTW Lots of room in the clutch to gain track speed. AKA RKT

I am a Ski-Doo guy myself. I do though have an 05 M-7 turbo and this chassis is very smooth even powered up to 16+psi of boost. There are some quality issues I have with it and some fit and finish issues, but the engine is bullet proof!! I have an 08 XP turboed also and the XP even in stock trim was a handfull coming off the Cat. I did change some things on the XP to help, but it is still not as smooth as the Cat. The M-7 is a little soft on the bottom. The XP is a tractor. You will not be dissapionted in the Cat, just upgrade the front suspension bushings and install a relocator bracket on the front arm in the rear suspension to get full travel. No hatter who's big bore your looking at the best real hp you will see will probably be in the 160hp range. Great engine regardless. Also upgrade to the 10.4 secondary clutch.

The mods you can do to an m7 are endless. and with a "few" grand you can turn even an old m7 into a real sleeper. I put a few grand into my 06 m7 and never changed any of decalling to give it that art of deception look. Turns some 1000 heads even.........

My $.02, why spend that much money for 100 more cc's of power when you can spend a little more for 300? Answer: Cutler 1000cc BB. It rocks!! The only thing better for a M7 would be the turbo, but I don't have any experience with that.

Your right "the economy". The reason why I am considering the m7 for trade is because I won't have payements. All my toys are paid for, especially while the economy is bad. I have always been a skidoo guy. Last sled I owned was a 809 triple union bay motor in a s chassis summit. Was a hard runner and extremely reliable. Since most of the manufactures are putting out pretty competetive machines I've become a little more open to different brands. Basically I am wanting to build something runs hard that I can boondock, play in the powder and climb with that I don't have to watch like a hawk or let rest every ten minutes. I am looking at several different set ups including the cpc dragoncat 1000, rkt, and the speedwerx 925. Just trying to get a feel for each one with a balance of reliability and power. Thanks for all the input. Any experiance those three kits would be great.

06 m7

I have had my 06 m7 153 since they came out and I love the sled. All that I have had done to mine was some clutching, d&d can, relocation bracket. I have ridden with the new sleds and it keeps up pretty well. i have ridden the new summit and it was difficult for me to ride. the m7 is so nimble in the trees and light. You will not be dissapointed with the m7 in my opinion.

I would save the bills and buy a 800 163" Skidoo weight is so much less plus you have all the new features.

Even though it is the lightest mountain sled, but only by a few pounds to the M8, it feels the heaviest on the Mountain. The M series roll over onto their side waaaayyy easier when i compared the two. Even the Much heavier rmk rolls on its side easier due to the motor being mounted higher on the RMK which makes it tippier. I am a die hard cat guy, but i think an M7 would be a great sled for you, especially if you put a cpc dragoncat 1000 kit in there!

My experience with Cutler's dragoncat motor has been very good. I've had it now for several years. The biggest thing is to do exactly what cutler tells you to do to break it in. Because it uses wiseco pistons with little cylinder to piston clearance, the break in is very time consuming but worth it in the end. You have to run 4 full tanks of fuel with very precise directions or else you will sieze, guaranteed!! So patience is extremely important, but once you are there and have it tuned it runs very well. The only really bad experience I've had is my diamond drive. No sooner than I put the BB on I went thru 3 complete diamond drives. Cutler said I was the only one he knew of have so much trouble, but that didn't make me feel any better. I ended up buying a black diamond, and just to be safer than sorrier, I completely pull it apart, clean it out, and change the oil every few rides. Since then I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. The motor is very strong, and with just a 141" track and in deep powder, I'm the one who is hi-marking the hills. I ride with a stock M7 141, a basically stock m7 153, a slightly moded m8 153, a stock m1000 153, and a king kat 162 with a cutler 1150 in it. We ride with some other people from time to time with different machines and my sled holds its own. I've been extremely happy with it. It's very light weight, very nimble and has tons of power, and has been very reliable. I've had lots of bad luck with electrical problems (not related at all to the BB), including a coil go bad, a stator go bad, a fuel pump plug up, and a ground wire come off, but I've never had a failure because the motor was just plain not reliable.

How is the tuning of that 1000? Do you set it and forget it? What about elevation/condition changes?

Mjunkie sets it and forgets it... It runs good in all conditions.
He is probably on the safe side of jetting.
With his diamond S hood, his sled is very consistant.
With the stock hood it would heat soak and load up a little in over the hood pow, but nothing you couldn't tolerate.
He mostly rides 7-10, lowest altitude would be around 6.
