m7 clutching

I bought an 05 m7 this year and the clutching is all out of wack-and i dont know what to do. When it gets to about 70 mph it vibrates pretty bad from the clutches and it doesnt backshift AT ALL. also i just went to cooke and could only pull about 7600 rpms but before i rode it at home (sea level) it would pull 7900 but also wouldnt backshift. belt deflection is about 1.5" and as far as i know its supposed to be 1 1/8. have tried shimming everyway possible. i know its really low out in cooke but shouldnt it be a little higher at home also?
what do i do to fix the problem?
its got stock clutches and i use the recommended weights.

can anybody point me in the right direction? headed back to cooke feb 5. need to get it runnin right. thanks

Welcome to stock M7 clutching, David. Deflection shouldn't be hard to fix...but make sure it has a good belt, and the sheeves are clean, first.

For better backshift, screw in the big white plastic ring under the secondary cover...you'll need an adjuster wrench for this. Stock clutching will need around .5-.75" in from outside of the cover to the ring. Want more? Install a goodwin blue or Cat orange secondary spring and a shift assist, maybe a straight 38, or 42-36 progressive helix (though for higher altitude, the stock 36 may be all your sled will want).

FWIW, 7600 isn't that bad on a pull, 7700-7800 is better, but may not pull more trackspeed if you get there by dropping weight in the primary.

Good luck,
John

Shift assist and Orange with stock helix is perfect for the M7. Also check the Primary spring for roller and spring wear or to see if the spring is broken. Check your secondary rollers and replace. Back shift on the stock setup is never spectacular, but greatly improved with the shift assist. Cheap and you don't have to buy after market systems. My M7 stands up at will and climbs with the big bores without turbo's. :beer;:D:beer;

alright thanks guys. i will try new springs in both and i think ill go with the orange spring, and i already have a shift assist. ill post how it works!

It doesn't backshift at all? So your beat get stuck in the secondary and kills the motor right? If so its your primary, the main bushing is seaed on the casing. I just had the same thing happen to me and costed me a whole new primary.

no it doesnt kill the motor its just like it gets stuck in "3rd" or the high gear and wont backshift into "1st" or "2nd" -(lower gears) so when im playing the the trees or just cruizing on the trail at 20-30 mph and hit the throttle it takes a while to get up to speed or really start to pull.

I just had the same problem with my 06 m7. Check your rollers on your primary. One was a funny color and was not rolling. i took the outside off and this is what i found.Sounds like this is what yours is doing. Mine felt like it was starting off in second or third gear. Mark it with a felt pen on both parts of the clutch so it goes back on the same way............

Hope this help. :beer;:beer;:beer;

I ride cooke pretty much every weekend with two 05 m7s and this is what we are running and the one works good the other has not been tested will let you know after tomorrow gold spring in primary 68 gram weights 42/36 helix and a orange spring in the secondary little white adjuster turned in about .5 from the outside of cover. that setup runs very well. The other has a ovs conversion with a snopro green in the 5th hole straight 36* helix 68 gram weights and a gold spring in the primary have not tested yet but i think it is going to rip
