M1100T Oil change Tips

If you have not changed your oil yet, here are a few things you will want to remember for when you do.

1. The gorilla that installed the oil filter at the factory should be slapped extremely hard in the nads....... That sucker is on there really tight!

2. Oil filter wrench. DO NOT BOTHER getting a PLASTIC socket style wrench, get a metal one. You will round out the plastic square where the extension fits on the filter wrench. The plastic ones are garbage. I found mine at my Cat dealer on the shelf. It was actually marketed and packaged by John Deere (THey are a John Deere dealer as well) $5.35

3. The oil filter is offset from the access point, you will need a u-joint adapter on the filter wrench to get the proper angle.

4. Dont bother following the owners manual about taking out the foot well. Take out the muffler instead. This makes waaay less of a mess. The bolt for draining the oil out of the tank is about 6" away from the outlet of the exhaust. Make yourself a cardboardfunnel (Of sorts) and direct the oil flow over to the outlet and down into a container. THe oil comes out really fast so when you get the funnel lined up, take the threaded plug out until it just about falls out, and then hold it in there so it just about falls out. This will slow the flow of oil so the funnel can keep up. Yes your hands get dirty, but it will slow the oil so it does not get all over......

5. To get the oil level up to the middle of the sight glass, it will take about 3.75+ quarts of oil.

6. Hood reinstallation: Keep the air filter and housing on the hood! Waaaay easier to get the hood back on again........

I know, I know, even discussing changing oil is noobish (Everybody knows how to change oil right?)....... Yea, well these are simply tips for making your experience less troublesome.......

So you didn't drain the oil from the engine just the resevoir? Why not drain all the oil? No use doing half an oil change. Also strap wrench works good on the filter too.

Exactly

LMAO your spot on with how my change went. I wish you would have posted this before I changed mine. Changing mine the first time was a B!t(h! I've done mine twice now and the second time was much easier. Boy howdy was the original filter tight. I'm surprised it didn't leak. After three trips to the parts store for the cup style filter wrench, ( plastic first time= stripped, Metal one second time= broken out center piece, metal third ) I finally got it off and had cuts and blood running from my hands.

Not sure how you got a strap style wrench in the tight space but now the filter isn't gorilla tight the cup style one is what I will use.

I did drain the oil from the engine itself,,,,,,,,,,,,, yes.

There are no tips on that part of it,, so I left it out.......

The strap style will not work in that tight space (Tried it and have a bloody knucke to show for it, LOL)

another funnel option

Arctic Cat service update shows taking a 1qt oil bottle and cutting one side out of it. Lay it down flat with the cutoutside up and the open top will be lined up right with the exhaust outlet and drain into your drain pan.

Old thread I know.
Just thought I would see what brand and weight oil people are running in their 1100T.
