M1100T break in question......

After drinking heavily, taking mild sedatives and bouncing off the walls wondering if my M1100T would ever show up or if I would be a casualty of Cat running out of them and never getting one, Christmas came. Got a text from my dealer of just a picture of my M1100T Sno Pro Limited. He is 90 miles away and I was probably there in 30 minutes. :)

Anyway, reading through the manual, the break in period for the M1100T is rather damn long. 600 miles total of nothing more than 3/4 throttle with an occasional blurp at WOT.

Man, that is ALOT of break in! I have always broken in my sleds according to the manual, and have never had an engine problem (well, until this year on my 5 year old modified M1000, but it was due). That being said, I think my M7 was 100 miles, my M8 and M1000 the same.

Question is, how many of you are adhering to the break in, and how many are fudging a little simply because you can't take it anymore? If I have to wait 600 miles to really run it hard, I might have to start on the sedatives and drinking again....... :)

Oh yeah, one other thing, all my other sleds had places for a spare belt. Can't seem to find one on the M1100T. Pretty tight under the hood. Is there one I am missing?

Merry Christmas!

at half throttle you will build a lot of boost, and have no problem going 80 mph. Since we don't have enough snow to climb anything, half throttle is all we need right now. Half way through my breakin, and yah I couldn't resist anymore. I pin it but don't hold it very long. As for the belt...don't come with a place to put one... or anything else.

Got a 150KM on it and im just running it like a normal sled just not holding it wot for long its to tempting not too

Drive it but do not hold the throttle wide open for long. Varying the throttle is the best. I am no expert. There are a couple ideas out there for spare belt placement ie "under seat cut some foam away or clutch side by the toe hold" Enjoy the new sled, I am.

drive it like you stole it!!

took mine out friday. You should drive it the way you are going to ride it for life. You have to let it warm up before it will drive out of the trailer. I had my son read the book and on the turbo's it states no break in period. This is a awsome sled and you will love it. Watch my dealer PDI my sled and we found the voltage regulator unpluged. Put 70 miles on it the first day. And can't wait to ride it again.

You might want to get your son to read the book again. Arctic cat recommends no full throttle until 500 miles.

A fourstroke engineer from Cat said...........

The first 100 miles is important. AT least stick to that. I guess that what's going on is that rough edges and tight clearances are being smoothed off. Then you want to change oil and get the metal particles out of the engine. After that it isn't that big of a deal. There is no magic mile on the ODO that sets you free.

Well, our diesel trucks take 100,000 miles to break in, but they run to a million. If it takes a long time to break an engine in, it takes a long time to wear it out!

Pretty clear it does have a break in. I would reread page 6.

I also have freinds who have gone the "run it like you are going to ride it" philosophy, but some have eaten thier words down the road.

Manual says to run oil in gas for the 800's on the first tank. Whether dealer or owner didn't, that didn't turn out too well for some guys either.

This is not a cheap sled. Cost as much as some cars. I think I will go with the manual, at least until I get close to the first break in oil change at 500 miles.

Thanks everyone. Love it BTW! :)

Just curious, but how many people break in their daily driver? You never hear about that when you pay $30,000 for a new car and drive it off the lot.

It's hard to drive a car......

like a sled. Wide open on a side hill? Not that often. Take it easy on that fourstroke for a hundred miles.

I just bought a new truck(ford ecoboost). Manual clearly states break in procedure. The most important thing according to manual is vary the throttle and not to stay at one rpm for any extended period of time. Also states not to pull a trailer till 1000 miles or 1600 kms. Doesn't mean people listen or follow it, but there is proper break in procedure.

The last generation F150 (2010 5.4L) also had a similar break in.

I live in Jackson Hole and love to climb. Hard to climb if you can't run WOT up a hill. Anyway, I will probably get a couple of hundred miles on it and then start riding pretty hard till 500 mile oil change.

I would think the pistons, rings and valves would be seated pretty well by 200 miles.

On the plus side, hopefully is will last alot longer than my other 2 stroke sleds. I usually do at least a top end rebuild on them between 2500-3000 miles. I would hope to get thousands and thousands of reliable mies out of it.

Sad.

I'm staring at my M1100T in my shed, occasionally start it and let it warm up. Outside I stare at all my brown grass and zero snow situation. Have a trip planned to Cooke in Feb. for a 7 day outing. Way things are going I will still have .6 miles on it when I get there. So how the heck do you break this thing in right when your riding with a group of 12? Ugh. Sucks to take a trip and break the sled in on your whole trip.

Owen, I wish we would get some more snow I have 28 miles on and I want to get to 100 so I can change my oil before my trip on the 10th of jan.

Know what you mean. I should be in Cooke now, but I picked up my sled Friday and wasn't going to Cooke to just trail ride. :face-icon-small-fro
