M1000 vs M8 what's the real scoop

I think this topic is very good. They claim that the m8 is with in 5 hp of the 1000 for 2010. Even if the m8 runs 160hp and the 1000 at 162hp, what is the chances that the m8 with run with the 1000? I would really like to know because i have a 10 m8 162 on my mind and looking at a 09 1000. Has anyone tested the 10 m8 against a 1000 in stock form?

not to be a downer, but didnt the 2010 m8 fall short of 160 on dyno. thats what i've heard anyway. i have seen one of the best set up 2009 "stock m8" run against a 2007 m1000 with only a can on it , m8 was 153 PC, and m10 was 162 PC. and in more set up conditions, m8 was surprisingly close to it an uphill drag. both close out of hole, and m10 was just slowly pulling away. but i think had it been deep stuff, m10 would of won hands down. and if i were you, go with m10, no replacement for displacement. my .02

We bought a bunch of new sleds in our riding group this year, and I was lucky enough to ride with all varietys on a steady basis. Heres what we found. 09 M8 and XP 800 ( one 162 and the other 163 ) were neck in neck, and both riders weighed in about the same 220ish range. The dragon 163 had the full bolt on SLP kit (No head mod and no porting) and it was a riot to ride but was not quite there with the stock M and XP. My M1000 has a full D&D exhaust, BDX intake, Boss seat and M8 gears. I was expecting alot from this sled and was honestly dissapointed at first, I was running dead even with the M8 and XP. Then we tried a switch, I`m 6`5" and weigh 295 lbs and who new it made that much differance! Me on the M8 or XP went from even to about 150-170 feet lower on the hill, my 220 lb buddy on my 1000 blew past all our marks and only turned out when the point was obviously made. If youre over the 230-240 mark forget the 800! That being said the only thing I really noticed about the way they handled differently is that the 800 power is smooth and linear, and the 1000 is pretty rammy and wore my buddies out alot quicker. End of rant.

Weight is huge in racing up hills. I raced my wife's 07 M8 against my buddy's 09 D8 and his has the slp set-up on it and the M8 was stock except for clutching. he weighs 160 and i weigh 220. when we raced he would barley pull me. When we changed sleds he would blow by me and high mark me handily. If your big get the 1000. I did.:beer; JMO

Thanks for all the great info guys. I'm a bigger guy about 250# with gear on and can ride pretty good I was just worried about all the stories I here is that the 1000 don't run that much harder than a m8, but most of this is coming from m8 guys. I'll have to keep my eye out for a deal on a 09 or a 10 m1000.

Skinner is dead on, big guys need the big one. I rode with two 1000's and five eights most of the year. The 150 # guy on the m8 was always giving me a run for the money, but I didn't want his and he didn't want mine.

This past year on my 09 1000 was the funnest, most trouble free year I have ever had. It responds lighter in the front end than my wifes 07 m-8 with twice the grunt... Very easy to slide through the trees and bumps. I've loved every minute of it, even the trail home.

If only it wasn't so front end heavy.:D

For what its worth here is a quote from the snowmobile mag review online after testing the new 2010's....

"In fact, we compared the M8 to the M1000 and we’re willing to bet that with the new 800 motor the M8 is nearly as potent in stock trim as the M1000, and it’s a lot more fun to ride with none of the vibration of the M1000 and all of the go. To put it simple, if you are looking for a mountain sled, you should buy the M8 Sno Pro."
