Lost 87 year old rider

Sad Day

Was up at the base camp at 4 corners when the news came in, very sad. I had my 9 and 11 y/o with me because i thought it was important that they understand the gravity of this situation and the impact it has on our "tracked and ski" community. My boys happened to see the SAR tow sled go by with Dale in it and we had a long talk about LIFE. Made me realize that at 87 y/o, if I can still get out in the pow...I can think of no more peaceful place to meet my maker than in the quiet of the great outdoors, surrounded by the mountains that have given me pleasure for so many years and my trusty 2 stroke. I hope that Dale went on in peace and I hope I get the chance to follow in his footsteps and will meet him on the other side.

Well said, my sentiments exactly.
Kudos to you for being involved in the search and doing what you could to help
Dbl Kudos for bringing you kids and showing them the importance of volunteerism and the life lesson that encompassed the entire tragedy.

:moon: R.I.P. Dale

Thanks to all

I would just like to THANK everyone who gave there time and effort to looking for my Father-in-law. The effort by Chelan County and Kittitas Search and Rescue was above and beyond anything I have seen. Most of them were there from the night he went missing until the day he was found. The fog, wind and snow made it almost impossible to search most of those days.
He had been riding and four wheeling ( Jeep and ATV )that area for forty years so he was very familiar with the area. There was 8 riders that day, so it goes to show how fast one can get seperated. If one person that reads this can get someone else who doesn't carry a radio or cell phone to carry one, then maybe we can keep this from ever happening again. And once more to Kittitas and Chelan County and ALL the people that helped, I and the family thankyou a million times over. And I need to add the Chelan County Sheriffs department ( Gene Ellis and his crew ) for their effort in the organization and dedication to the search. They were there 24 hrs. a day. Heartfelt Thankyou.

R.I.P Dale ... We all hope we can still be alive and snowmobiling at your age. Condolences to family and friends and all that helped in the search. Red Dog.

This is a sad story.

Please take a look at www.findmespot.com.

We now require that all riders in our group have one of these with them.

They are not perfect (they need a line-of-site to the sky so they don't work if they are buried, or covered) but they could sure help get people out of most of these kinds of situations.

REI and others sell this item. There are a few other similar products on the market.

We keep these on and set to "track" mode at all times. This ensures that the sled and rider can be found without requiring the rider to take any actions.

You can also manually "check in" by hitting an "OK" button.

If the rider hits the "Help" button your "team" will be contacted telling them that you need assistance (and let's them know where you can be found).

If the "911" button is pushed a signal is sent directly to Search and Rescue.

SPOT uses a system of satellites. OK and Help functions send pre-set emails and/or text messages to your "team".

911 goes directly to emergency dispatchers.

Might be worth looking into. Please note that these are NOT avalanche beacons.
