Losing power on the top end

My 02 800 is losing power on the top end. I can pin the throttle to the bar and she runs great up to about 8500 RPM then it's like it hit a govenor...Didn't have this problem last year and this was on my first and only ride this year. Fresh gas (Premium) and new plugs.

Any pointers is greatly appreciated!

Why you turning the motor at 8500? Better go though the clutches cleaning and inspecting.

That motor is only supposed to spin at 8200 even with a pipe on it. If it's spinning that high, primary is likely binding and preventing shift out. service both clutches like suggested above. CDI has a reve limiter built into it.

Yes....closer to 8,000 8100max!! It loses power dramatically above that.

Thinking about it, I was on a fairly icy road and mabey it was just spinning the track and maxing out...
