lose power

I have a 98 700 rmk ....twin slp pipes and stingers slp head with a 144 2 in it will turn 8000 rpm in the mountains all day long .....the problem i am finding is when i ride for awhile climbing or whatever it will lose a little power if i shut it off for 5- 10 min let it cool down a bit then fire it up and take off up the mountain it will pull really hard for a couple of pulls then it starts to lose a little power ....not alot .....example .....i was pulling this hill and could get over the top with some work .....we shut off and were talking to some other guys for about 20 min .....we decided to go so i fired it up let it run for a min before i pulled full throttle and it shot over the hill like it was on rocket fuel .....after it ran for a bit it was back to getting over the hills but had to work at it again .......i am really impressed with the sled .....it will pull beside my buddies 2002 800 summit x with a 144 ....in fact it highmarked his a few times....... i have idle jets are at 40 ......2.25 turns on the air screw and 165 main jets .....has a bottom end bog right off idle ......will a boost bottle help get rid of this ......want to get it nice and crisp all the way through the power band

check coolant level, sounds like its heat soaking a bit.
water pump belt
remove and clean carbs/jets
install fuel filter
make sure you have the correct spark plugs
compression check.

good luck

Thanks for the info ....have checked the water pump and belt .....all good there ....coolent level is perfect ......carbs were cleaned a few times it runs really well .....havn,t done a compression check on it ....seems good well pulling it over .....it is never hard to start 1st pull everytime ....

sounds like your clutches are getting hot. when they cool down it works again. check for bad motor mount as well.

Good point, if it's losing power without dropping rpm, good chance it's clutch related. The clutch sheaves and belt tend to run a lot hotter than they should if there is any problem with clutching.

Thanks for the info guys ....i think you might be right .....i had my secondary apart and cleaned it up ....when i put it back togather i wasn,t sure what hole to put it in ....so i put it in #3 it is pretty tight .....i noticed it was having trouble upshifting i am going to move the spring to the 2nd hole and try it .....has anyone used v force reeds before i have a set and have never tried them before are they worth putting in and what about re tunning the sled????? ie jet,s

Hey it got the same sled, 98 xc 700, 151, a few more engine mods tho! I got the delta force reeds in mine (same thing) but i did them when i did the whole engine build and porting and stuff but they say they run richer when installed, seems weird if they make more power, just check your plugs and wash, the boost bottle should help smooth it out too, helps with the low to mid burble these have!!! As for the power loss, it could be the belt heating up, ive swapped mine out after it was losing rpm's when climbing for awhile and it climbed like a champ again, so now im getting a new carlisle ultimax XS belt for it!!!

ufo's

UFO's will do more for your thottle response then a boost bottle will and you will have less of a chance of a burn down

It should have D-slides in it so UFO's wont fit, i put SLP power pack's in mine and that really helped for throttle response, two little plates go in the front of the carbs, made it pull hard down low!!

whats the timing at if it is not set correctly that could be your anser its on the edge of deto at opp temp. or like outhers say cluches are getting hot. i have a 97 with twins i love the thing. what elevation you at judging by your main i assume 6-9k . if so make sure that is a rich bog the keinds have a horeble weak idle cerket witch means you may need bigger pilet jets at elevation than at sea level due to weaker air signal.

thats what i ment

Thats what i ment to say i have them on my 98 700 and it is light and day difference on the throttle.
