Looks like it's Back to School for Me!

So I got the news a few weeks ago that due to my back injury I can't be a mechanic anymore. So WSIB decides to send me back to school. Went yesterday morning for a Psyco-vocational assesment, now they are talking Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Electronic Engineer. . . at first I was a little apprehensive but now I think this could be a very good thing. Anybody here a Mechanical Engineer? What should I be expecting in school?

Thanx

Mike

Ive got a degree in ME. While your going to school, it seems hard as hell. Once you get out, you realize it wasn't really that bad. In the end, I know it was worth my time. As far as what to expect, you will learn math that you never knew existed.

I originally went to school for Civil Engineering, but switched after 1 year. I hated all the Math, and didnt really enjoy the rest.

For 1 class I had to interview a Engineer, and the one thing he told me he hated about college was all the math he had to learn, and has never used since graduation.

thats usually the way it goes.. they teach you abunch of math you will use maybe once if your lucky... sorry to hear about the forced change of work..

Yaaaayyy! Math! That's outstanding. I don't really find it difficult but it was never my passion. I have been out of school for quite a while. It's really gonna take some gettin used to.

honestly, a lot of the math you use you don't really realize you're using. I use algebra a lot when I think about it. Most of what they teach you is more so you know how to do it and what answers to expect. Take calculus, i know integration is calculating the area under the curve of a graph. Big fkin deal.... but at work, I use it all the time. Flow meter captures flow, feeds that array into the computer, computer draws the graph of the flow, then integrates the area under that curve to get volume.

Computers will do most of the work for you, but a human still has to know how to tell the computer what to do.

Oh trust me I know. If it wasn't for the tremendous pain and the possibility of permanent paralysis this would be a near perfect deal. Before I got the go ahead I went for a meeting with the 3rd party that sets everything up for the WSIB. They broke down everything cost wise over the course of the next 5 years. WOW!! glad I ain't payin that.

That and more education only makes you realize that you know less and less about the world, at least you end up knowing more than you did before.

Oh, the math isn't too bad, but it is everywhere. Just remember that it is a language used to try to describe relationships in the physical world. First you find out how to manipulate/use the numbers, then you learn there relationships. The numbers aren't as important as the relationships between them.

Going into my 4th year of my ME degree. Its tough but nothing that can't be handled, and yes, there is math beyond math. But if you can get through that then your set. Welcome and enjoy, haha.:beer;

Graduated with an BSME ~1½ years ago. I loved it in school, didn't really have a problem with the math once I got together with a good group of friends who could all do the homework together. That was pretty much key though, find others to do homework with. The actual math classes were the hardest, because it wasn't practical application, in the engineering classes, it was easier to understand.

Good luck

It didn't take any beatings.... Just I found the number of times I had a questioned expression on my face increased exponentially with the amount of years I was in school.....

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL TOMORROW!!!! I was talkin to a friend of mine about how long this was all gonna take. Told him I'm gonna be done in the fall of 2013. He says "But wait isn't the end of the Myan calander 2012?" I say you know what it is!! So now I'm thinkin I'm not just goin to school for a long frikkin time I'm potentialy goin to school till the end of time!! hahaha

Went out shoppin for a laptop computer today. Gotta get it at Staples (some contract between them and WSIB) anyhow are there any of them I should avoid? Kinda out of my element here, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanx

Mike
