Looking for new Helmet? 509, Poo, Doo, AFX, Klim?? Choices

My helmet is getting old and beat up now.. It was an HJC CLX something or other and it has been fine. I'd like to get something new though. Man there are choices out there.

I realize the KLIM is a big step up and although I cant quite figure out what they are made out of they sure must have a bit more technology, venting, etc than the rest of the "lower end" options. The lower end stuff isn't bad from what I can tell, its just a "plastic" as opposed to carbon or kevlar.

I see the 509 stuff is popular on here. What sets them apart from say a stock Poo or Doo helmet or one of those AFX or HJC that my dealer sells. I haven't been able to truly see one up close just yet. I like their graphic design but are they really a better helmet, designed better, to warrant the slight extra cost?

Thanks for the help guys!

i liked the 509 but i couldnt get it to fit right. med was to small, large was to big. i ended up with a kevlar/carbon fiber fly helmet. it's real light, i like it.

All of those are great products, no doubt.

You cannot go wrong with an Arai. They are spendy, but well worth it.

The 509 helmet is the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn (and the price aint too shabby either;)) The HJC helmets are tighte rand they rub against my temples when I take them off and it hurts after a day of riding.

doo

i have been wearing a medium skidoo helmet with tiny pads in it so my big ol melon will fit. i like it cause its smaller lighter, theory. just got a klim and am extremely dissappointed. heavy xl klim fits like my doo medium? fragile and heavy! way too many parts. ill be looking at the new doo carbon lid here next. $405 on e bay, decent.
have all kilm gear as well and thumbs down for two years running. always wet and cold. my hmk pro boa s are always wet as well?
maby its me?

I was in the same boat as you trying to figure out what to get. I pay close attention to the reviews on here as there is always a thread like this. Alot recommended the 509, so I bought that one. Granted I have only went out once with it, and I am no means an every weekend sledder, but I really enjoyed it, light, looks good, and here is the best part, inexpensive!

I saw someone commented on the fit, and I have to agree, it did not feel right at all at first. (Online order) I thought I needed the next size bigger but it was on the table and I kept trying it on. After a few tight squeezes it started to give, and now it fits me perfect. If you get one, just go with your hat size and give it time, not much, but some, it will fit. Unless you measure wrong I think most will be happy.

Good luck, for me it has always comes down to price and what peeps recommend on this site, for the most part people are great here. They have helped me immensely.

Mulestar.

Supposedly the interior of the 509 is "better" than the afx, but the outside of the helmet is the same. Not worth the extra $$$ for the 509 compared to the afx.

I picked up a Fly Carbon Fiber F2 this fall, pretty dang light, I've only had one ride with it, but, so far so good.

I briefly had a KLIM, but it didn't fit right, and I thought it was heavy.

If you are wet and cold with all Klim and HMK gear, you've gotta be doing something wrong. My guess would be that you have a cotton layer on somewhere. Cotton kills, doesn't matter what you're wearing on the outside.

Have bought 4 of the KLIM F4 helmets for myself and my family.
Aboslutly LOVE them because they work so well in the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter with the internal conversion kits.
AND
The removable fitting pieces that allow you to customize each helmet to fit you perfectly.

509.very comfy..and their goggles fit amazing to their helmets...i went into a dealer in town...the salesman is an avid rider...he is klim all the way...EXCEPT..he would not let me buy the Klim helmet...he said way to much ventilation and way to cold even with the extreme weather conversion..he MADE me buy the 509 lol...i like what i hear about the flys as well

So who makes the 509 helmet? just got some 509 goggles and coming from motocross and dirtbikes, I have always used Fox gear without any problems.

Looking seriously at the Fox helmets and Fly as well - considered 509 but they seem a little cheap compared to the Fox top of the line units.

Shoei and Arai can't be dissed for moto - don't know about the venting for super cold snow days.

Most of my days are sunny, clear and deep so a little venting is ok.

I have a 509 helmet. It doesn't fit me as well as I would like. Seems to push down on my goggles (509, Oakley, Haber and Smith). It's probably just my face and I'm not knocking their product. I still use the helmet, but I wish it fit a little better. My point is to try them on if you can. Buy one that fits your face good w/o cutting off your breathing.

ok but why? What makes it better than say an AFX for $90ish? I seriously want to know? Are they really "molded" to their goggles better?

If for no other reason then your money is going to a small sledder owned and operated company.

I would like to recommend "Scorpion" as a helmet. I bought one two years ago after riding with an HJC and absolutely love it. Although many have never heard of them, I was walking through the local motoplex and noticed a helmet that caught my eye. I tried it on and was amazed at how well it fit my head. I asked the lady working and she said they are more well known in Moto-x but that they work great for snowmobiling and have a kit that works well for snowmobiling. I absolutely love it and it has some great graphics. If i get a chance later, I'll try and add pictures if you want. Mine is a black with chameoleon green/gold type paint that isn't "in your face" but subtle and really looks pretty nice.
