Looking for a camcorder?

I'm looking at getting a camcorder, have done a little reseach but not much. I'm looking at a canon hv-30.

I'm no professional by any means, but would like to record our sledding, I don't want to spend a lot of time learning or editting, so I need something easy, but still high quality.

Is this camera high enough quality to make a DVD to sell if that's something I choose to do in the future?

OR...should a guy look for a used canon gl 1 or 2 or something compareable?

How much better is the canon xl series than the gl?
Thanks for any input.

HV-30 while only being a single CMOS sensor still puts out the goods. It would blow the doors off any GL1, GL2, XL1, XL2 or any SD camera for that matter. Great camera, decent zoom, on board audio sucks, but what do you want for a sub 1k cam ? As for producing a movie from the footage, why not ? people have used less quality units to make movies from, but equipment is only 20% of the challange to filmmaking, knowing how to use your equipment is the other 80%.
How much better is Canon's XL series than the GL ? well, not much difference. XL's have an interchangable lens system, and the GL doesnt. The flourite lens on the GL is pretty decent right out of the box and is a 20x. Very versitile. As for overall picture quality, ask Doc zoom, those are his staple cams.

here is my set up

Sony HDR Fx1 HDV cam with all filters, wide angle lens, and telephoto lens
Dynex DX-MW010 tripod/ micro fluid head
I use adobe Premier to edit

if you want to save a little $ get a hv-20, the hv-30 is just this years release with no big improvements over the 20.

not trying to shlt all over your plan but with the low prices of high quality video equipment these days it seems like everyone has the "great" idea to sell sled videos. with no previous filming/editing experience on top of that.

but i would highly recommend getting a camera and messing around with filming/editing, its fuking fun. just give the finished product away and enjoy the memories with your friends.

Isn't that the truth....I'll probably never producea film, but it's nice to know that if I have some footage that is good enough that maybe it could be featured in someone else's film. OR, if I ever get motivated to learn enough to produce one that would be decent quality that the film is going to be good enough.

Thanks for the responses.
