I have 3 pairs of the smoke jumpers and love em.
i wear the crap outta em too(over 12 hours a day 7 days a week), the only part i dislike is that rebuild times can seem to go a little long at times, but oh well.
I have never done the soaking them in water before, i get the leather preservative(the white paste) from whites and coat them in it, then take a hairdryer to them. With a new set of boots you can do this to them 2 to 4 times before you even wear em. then after you wear them repeat the process, the bonus is you don't get leaky seams.
using this method i have never had a bad break in expericence.............but it does take some time oiling them (especially in the first couple days) and i think lack of oiling them is one reason guys complain about breaking them in.
with farming/ranching and fighting fire in the summer i really can't beat these boots
