Look to buy a new helmet. What's good what's not?

For the DH MTB helmet people:

What brand/models are you wearing? Anyone using the Giro Remedy or are you guys & gals going more for the moto style face guard?

I'm ready for a new helmet too!

Giro Remedy here.

Did that have them at the last Puyallup snowshow? Or did you check them out someplace else locally?

What was the fit difference like between the Gyro and SixSixOne?

No Mt Bike helmets at the Snow Show...I was simply recommending he try on a bunch of different helmets...sounds like he want an MX helmet, so that is the best place to try on many diff brands.

Giro sizing is larger than SixSixOne.

i would recommend an HJC CL-X5N

i got mine for $99 at helmet outlet and its flat black, looks pretty cool when you remove the decals, kinda looks like what helmet batman would be wearing if he rode sleds, comes with a bag too

Just something to check out, some places require helmets to be DOT rated especially for people under 18. It's that way here in Minnesota. That reminds me I need to find a new brain bucket for my kid. I just may have to find one too.

I used to wear a M2R Revelation CF helmet, too bad they don't make it anymore. 2.2lbs and great fitting.
Bought a One Industries Trooper Ron Lechien Replica, love it for dirtbiking, too heavy for a full day of sledding though.
Bought a SixSixOne Flight II Legend and although a poly helmet, fits great and light enough that my neck doesn't hurt at the end of the day. I was never a fan of poly lids but love the feel of 661 lids.

Dad wears the M2R Revelation X2 and likes it lots, also has a Shoei with TLD paintwork, loves it but worn out now.

I would never recommend ordering online if you haven't tried the lid on in person. I'd say 70% of people have the wrong helmet on because the salesperson didn't know how to fit a helmet, or the customer thought at time of purchase, that the helmet fit perfect. They should be "almost" uncomfortable when new for a perfect fit once broken in.

A good test is to try and spin the helmet on your head, if your skull moves around at all, try a smaller size, you want the skin on your face and forehead to move, but your skull to remain tight in the helmet. Check for pressure points, and a helmet should come just shy of your eyebrows, about mid forehead. Anything else and you should be looking at a different size, model or brand.

Thanks, good info.

To modsledr and backcountryislife - thanks as well. Will be trying on a giro remedy (2.2lbs!) as soon as I can make it to a bike shop. Bonus is I will have a full face mtb helmet to use when needed. Wifey will be happy about that.

Dang it where is Monte on this.

Reeb you are correct on getting the right fit. However when I bought my last helmet from Monte it was between two and one had some uncomfortable pressure points. I asked if it would break in over time and not push so hard....short of it is, the padding might get softer but it's the foam, not the liner/padding stuff that is causing the pressure and the only way it gives is if you whack your head.

I could be off a bit, since I don't sell lids, but find a good shop with a good honest salesman who will put you in the right lid no matter the price.

No, you're right on. Pressure points are not good! Sorry I wasn't clear, pressure points are definately the foam, not the padding, but fitwise, a touch under "uncomfortable" is what you're looking for. Meaning, linerwise, it needs to fit snug, so when the liner breaks in, the helmet will fit like a glove. And remember, helmets are much like underwear, once it's yours, you don't really want someone else wearing them.

BTW - I have a Fox DH helmet that I wear in the springtime, I have no issues with thinking it's not going to work in an accident. Mine is void of much of the normal venting you see on bike lids, works excellent in warmer weather and if I want to wear it in colder weather, nothing like a little duct tape to close up the venting it does have.

Hope all this helps and good luck finding a helmet that will work for you.

P.S. If you have a decent sized dealer that is willing to bring in a few different lids to try, buy from them, if they aren't willing to bring anything in, and simply turn you to what they have in stock..........try em, find the one you like, and buy online.

Thanks, good info. He has a few One helmets in stock right now, just not the one I'm looking at. I fit a few on and seems like XL fits best. With no balaclava or anything it fits fairly snug, but not to tight. Better than the one I have right now no doubt. He is totally willing to bring in what ever I want. (as long as he can get it) Right now he can't get the one I want, but once he can he will. They are really good that way. I know everyone at my dealer really well personally, so most times they can't be beat for service. :face-icon-small-hap
