Looking to buy a new helmet. What's good what's not?

Just like it says, I'm in the market for a new helmet. What's everybody using? I'm using a cheaper Polaris one right now, so won't take much to improve on what I've got. What are you guys using? Want to spend about $200 or so. I looked at One Industries helmets. Any one using those? What about other brands?

I bought the 509 helmet and sinister goggles last year and was very happy with both. The helmet is light weight and the goggles fit the face opening very well. Got lots of compliments on it also!!

Just bought a One Kombat the cheaper one this year. Got a hold over for 100 bucks.

To make it short much like my riding(dirt) season(only one weekend but a damn hot muggy weekend) I LOVE IT. I haven't had it on snow yet but the lid fits great, ventilates great and looks great.

Check out Bobs Cycle on the web.

If you have any questions about any helmet out there get ahold of thefullmonte on here. He used to work at Bobs and he steered me to the One Industries before I had even tried one on. The guy is extremely knowledgeable about helmets and he will give you an honest opinion that you can trust.

I have the 509 helmet and googles and didn't like them together. The googles crimped down on my nose so I went with Habor Vision googles and the fog eliminator and that combo worked better. The chin strap was short on my 509 helmet, but I have suggested that to them and 509 talked about making it longer.

I bought an AFX FX-17 from Dennis Kirk last year on sale for like $65 or something and REALLY like it. I believe that it is the same helmet 509 starts with before doing their graphics (same shape and vents and all).

Anyway, I liked the helmet so much I bought a second one for quadding in the summer and have no regrets. Dennis kirk doesn't sell that particular style any longer but you can still get them on the web. They have plenty of venting to help keep you cool also:D

Some good opinions so far. I was looking at 509's helmet last year. I have their goggles already. But they dont have a color that really stands out to me. Im liking some of the one industries helmets. As well as fly. Anyone here using a fly helmet?

i've owned a few now and last year bought the 509 with their goggles and couldn't be happier. fits great, and very comfortable. i tried the klim on numerous times but found it to be hands down the most uncomfortable helmet by far that i have ever tried on. just seemed very hard with little padding, but everyone head fits different and thats my opinion. 509 all the way.

I own 2 Fly helmets and 1 O'neal.. My oldest Fly went from quads in the summer to snowmobiling in the winter and worked great all around.. Loved it.. It is now retired, but made me buy another Fly helmet. I have only used that one for winter.. Am currently on the search for a new Fly helmet for this coming season (havent found one I liked as much as the one I have). My O'neal is also an awesome helmet. Only used it in the summer months though, so no idea how it performs in the winter. Overall, I wouldnt hesitate to buy another of either of these 2 brands. :face-icon-small-hap

Thanks guys. It's either the One industries Kombat, 509, fly trophy, or fly LX relic. Anyone order on line? I wouldn't mind trying them on, but can't get any of these here. Is sizing usiversal? Or do they vary like in shoes?

I would recommend trying them on for sure.. Out of the 3 helmets I have, all 3 are a large and all 3 fit entirely different.. The older Fly is a quite snug, newest Fly is a perfect fit and the O'neal is slightly bigger than the other 2. The O'neal is the one I ordered online and would debate doing it again with a brand I have never put on my head.

Yeah i know.... I have buying anything of this sort without fitting it on. I have a friend with the fly relic. I could fit that on. But im leaning to the one industries one. Not sure where i could find one of those.

I bought a HJC at the snow show last year. I love it!! It was about $125
CL-X5N Royale
Its light weight, but strong as H3LL. Interior is removable and washable too.

My white OAKLEY splice goggles w/ High Intensity Persimmon lenses looks wicked in the shell

2 seasons ago we switched to Mountain Bike Downhill Racing helmets.

SixSixOne and Gyro are the 2 main brands.

I'll never go back to a heavy MX helmet. I use to wear M2R Carbon Fiber model, and the mountain bike helmets are a full pound lighter and WAY more ventilation.

They conform to the European testing standards...and are designed for impacts more likely to be seen in mountain snowmobile riding.

Whatever you decide, definitely try them on before buying. SnowShows are a great place to try on a lot of different brands/models and sizes.

Any name-brand motocross helmet would probably suffice. I had a One Industries Kombat for both dirt and snow and loved it.

I just got a Sixsixone Fenix and I have yet to try it out, but it feels nice, very light too.

Do not cheap out on a helmet, stay away from the cheap brands..I don't even know what brands they are.. but AFX I think is one of them? You know.. the sub $100 cheap-o helmets. Make sure you buy name brand Fly, Fox, Sixsixone, One, Shoei, Arai, Thor, etc. You want to protect your noggin.

Which is also why I wouldn't wear a down hill mtb helmet like some guys run.. They are not designed for motosports use, and will not protect your head at all when it comes in contact with a 500 lb snowmobile.

Just my 2 cents..

What size noggin you got? I've got a brand new KBX pro dirt with an extra visor and a bag sitting in the garage. It's a XXL. Retail is/was $299 for it. Seems like a nice helmet, just a little too small for my big pumpkin head. I'm usually either a 2X or 3X depending on the fit. This one I should have been a 3:( I'd take $160 for it. It's red/black colorwise.

I'm a large most times. That's anyway what I've got right now. Thanks though.

Well guys thanks for the opinions. I think it pretty much comes down to what I know is good quality, then after that looks. Here's what I'm looking at so far.

One industries Kombat, black

One industries Kombat Traffic, White/Black

One industries Kombat, Red

And here's my jacket. Have matching pants. What helmet fits best? :P Sled is black with a few white accents. I'm not all into matching or looking super cool. But I want it to at least look good together.

Not to steer ya away from a good local dealer(I believe in supporting them) but if you are serious about a One or Fly, etc try some on and then check bobscycle.com(it's OK they are pretty much a local shop for us MN boys) and check their prices. And even check some of the holdover stock, way cheaper then current year.
